Saw Palmetto...pros and cons??

I'd like to know everyone's opinion about and personal experience of using saw palmetto. My urologist advised me to use saw palmetto to treat BPH. I've read conflicting information concerning it's effect on testosterone production and would like to hear from men who have used the herb. Also I read differing dosage amounts and see anywhere from 160mg to 320mg as the more recommended dosages. My doctor suggested 450mg which is higher than anything I have read online. I have tested for low testosterone production my entire life (typically in the low 200s to high 100s and once as low as 75) with frequent low grade pain and discomfort in my testicles. Will using saw palmetto make this worse of possibly help it? I've also read conflicting info on SP causing ED. Any information by group members would be very helpful to me. Post in this thread or message me privately if you wish. Thanks.

Well, I have just started using SP and was wondering its effectiveness myself. I guess you have already seen my postings "📖Chemical Castration by Natural Herbal Supplements." I have been reporting on my blog how things are going but nothing yet that I know of as far as symptoms from taking the herbal. Taking this three times a day at 450 mg per capsule. I have started at a testosterone level of 127 but that was back in May 2013. I hope to have a more current update on that level by the end of this year. I must be unusual because I have never experienced pain or discomfort from my testicles. From what I understand if your experiencing such symptoms you should be a candidate for surgical castration?

I will keep an eye on your postings, Thank you.

I took it for a while to supplement my medication as I didn't want to add yet another pharmaceutical (dutasteride, in the end.) I took 500mg per day (and trialled a gram for a while) and found it pretty counterproductive for me, but I've read it has a secondary phytoestrogenic effect and that probably blocked some of the estradiol I was injecting. As far as phytoestrogens are concerned the only one I've had any positive signs from has been bovine ovary - I've found that VERY effective.

About the strongest effect I got from saw palmetto was constipation. Compared to dutasteride it's extremely weak, and you can get them for around the same price these days. The same goes for other herbal 5AR blockers and antiandrogens I've tried.

Take the above as a warning, make sure you not allergic to it before you take it. Some one said to rub some of it on your arm to see if you have a reaction, it maybe a herb, but It's still a drug.

Yeah ate some with family at dinner table when it was served with a salad last yr and sis was appalled by how much my lip swelled.

My sis on otherhand is severely allergic to any mushrooms. She needs an epi-pen asap or else it restricts her breathing and she gets hives too

Well I am not allergic to it thankfully. I'd still very much like to hear from others who have used the herb and what they know about it's effects good or bad.

Paring was kind enough to share some very good information concerning saw palmetto in a recent thread but I'd like to hear from any and all others who have used it.

I have taken Saw Palmetto for years, usually the 350 (?) size. But in the couple of years I have found the 450mg size at Wally World and am taking two. I never noticed that you could take 4 during the day making 1800 in your system. I do wonder if the 900 mg I have been taking is helping my breast to grow. My urologist checked the last time I was in to see him. At that time my T level was 180. He now wants to see me in six months. Due to some pain issues, he examined that area quite closely, especially my penis since there were some reddish areas I was concerned with. He did not think there was anything to worry about but did want to see me in six months. He knows I take Saw Palmetto and how much. Perhaps it (SP) is keeping my T level low since I am only on 25mg daily. I wonder if I up the Saw Palmetto, will it makes my breasts grow larger.

Hey foxytaur, I'm not sure if I understand you correctly, you said that you ate some in a salad. Who in the world would serve this into a salad? Saw Palmetto is sold in form of powder (from dried berries) in capsules or in pills. Perhaps you're mixed up with "heart of palm" which is served in salad.
