ZOMG excited to carry around dreamcast, ,ds,neogeo, gba, snes, genesis, ps1, psp, pc-engine, n64,coleco, armstrad, amiga, nes all in the palm of my hand given the power of an arm cortex A15 (aka tegra 4 tablet like power, heck it is a mini tablet though an inpractical one XD)
Yeah it's a bulky handheld but a fox like me is used to carrying around behemoth handhelds such as the sega game-gear or sega nomad(thank god we don't have to carry 6 D sized battery cells anymore LOL)
game boy devices have come a long ways now

Wow man that's really cool! All those Emulators on one portable!!
I didn't even know about NVidia Shield until just now. I looked it up right after reading your post. I will probably get one at some point. That's a lot of "horsepower" for a handheld -- whats the battery life like? Also does it run any Android apps or only games?
They recently released the "Bards Tale" remake on Android. Great game, with a lot of funny moments (imagine if Mel Brooks and Monty Python got together and made a Role Playing Game. This would be it). If you like "3D Isometric" style games (such as the Diablo Series and the Torchlight Series), or if you like the type of humor Monty Python and Mel Brooks are known for, definitely check this one out:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... Tale&hl=en
Also, if you like 2D Platform Scrollers, see if you can find "PP Hammer" for the Amiga. It is one of my all-time favorites in that genera. You might be able to get "PP Hammer" from
www.lemonamiga.com or
www.amigaforever.com

battery life is amazing. they swapped the vibration feedback for a huge battery. 10 hrs use with steam streaming enabled, 6-7 hrs use with tegra 4 GPU gaming enabled and a whooping 18 hrs for daily tasks and browsing web.
It's the only android portable with an active cooling fan and heatsink btw
The shield is a big device. that's the only issue with it. Again if your comfortable with carrying a giant portable then game on hehe
Check out those sizes. Bigger is better folks

NB = honestly I loved the gamegear when I was young. for it's time it was impressive

I own a tegra2 based netbook, and though the cpu itself is rather interesting, but the software support is lacking. (Torvalds had the reason to show the finger to nVidia (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4SWxWIOVBM)). May be it is better with Tegra4, but previous ones were not good from the software side. As for the active cooling fan and big heatsink - it is not an advantage, I prefer my hardware silent, lightweight and cool :p (and long living). Fans are not known to be the toughest part of the devices. Not to say, that cats fur and dust is a real problem

Sorry for long wait, was working, but yeah....about the tegra 2 and 3 fhunter they were shitty chips (sorta)
Nvidia screwed the pooch in the sense that they cut corners and both had severe bottlenecks with the EMMC memory flash chip(storage) and both tegra 2 and 3 ran their data through a single 32 bit memory buffer module.
The problem with this was running multiple tasks through a very narrow throughout-put severely held back background processes and there you have it. Even Ipad 2 was faster than tegra 2 and 3 bc the embedded framework ran in dual 32 bit channels.
What about the EMMC chip?...... terrible random writes!!!!, simply terrible!!!!
(Try installing apps through the google play store and you'll notice how super duper slow it was)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The good news about tegra 4 is its dual channel memory, very fast sandisk EMMC embedded flash drives and they went opensource with the GPU and CPU. (read on xda developers, I think it's a win this time around for nvidia even though they lack googles support)
NB = developers even have a 2.5ghz overclock for the shield and it's apparently running stable.(As if it weren't fast enough)
All I can say it's gonna be a tough battle between snapdragon 800 and higher end tegra 4 chips. Snapdragon 800 will win of course.
It's a beast of a chip.
I believe had the snapdragon 800 had an active cooling fan it would easily annihilate what nvidia has in the shield but not by much. The random writes are def way better

The shield is a full Android device, so runs any app from Google play store that runs in landscape mode. It is a particularly good media center device as it has good audio (both speakers and headphone), great viewing angles, and long battery life, and most importantly you can adjust the screen angle -- it is like those portable DVD players that used to be so popular. You can watch hulu, Netflix, or you can serve personal movie collection over plex app.
It connects to big screens with HDMI or miracast (wireless HDMI).
By not being a flat rectangle it has several feature advantages -- huge batteries, speakers with ported bass, full-sized game controls, and dual MIMO Wi-Fi for long range wireless (it uses same Wi-Fi chip as in high end routers).
The long Wi-Fi range has made it popular with radio control hobbyists as you can control remote control vehicles with cameras on them. Check out YouTube videos showing it controlling ARDrones.
Also NVIDIA claims they will update it every year so within a couple years it will blow away any other handheld gaming device and even surpass the new Xbox and PlayStation.
Note also you should read about NVIDIA's GRID effort which could start streaming PC games online soon.
For parents the fact that they don't have to keep track of their kids' DS cartridges or Wii discs is a huge boon. And the economics of Android apps is so much better.

I just figured out how to put Firefox into Android on a cell phone.
Now if I could just clear out all those tabs it comes up with, from old pages, when I open it...
I am just so techno these days...
I even figured out how to transfer files to and from the phone. It only took me 3 hours, too!
