"42" the movie about Jackie Robinson

Post by Dave (imported) »

It's a good movie about Jackie Robinson entering baseball.

Well written. Reasonably good baseball scenes. It's not a purely baseball movie but since Jackie Robinson is one of the greats and Branch Rickey, Pee Wee Reese, and many of the other players are in the Baseball Hall of Fame, the movie has no choice but to be a baseball movie. It is first the story of Jackie Robinson and second a baseball movie.

It's spectacularly well acted. It's really loaded with good actors.

Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey is amazingly good. One of the best roles I've ever seen him play. It took me 10 to 15 minutes to hear the typical character Harrison Ford voice. That's how submerged he is as Rickey.

It's rented for two days. I might make more comments tomorrow.

For those who don't remember, Jackie Robinson desegregated major league baseball and went on to a spectacular career. His number "42" is the only number retired in ALL of major league baseball.

A Pittsburgh connection is Wendell Smith, a reporter for the Pittsburgh Courier, who Rickey hired to help Robinson.

And Branch Rickey went on to become General Manager of Pittsburgh. Rickey's tenure in Pittsburgh was so good that even after retiring in 1955, his changes are credited with making possible the 1960 pennant win over the NY Yankees.

Somebody has to say it:

I saw the thread title, and immediately hoped it was about a surreal new movie (by Terry Gilliam?) mixing baseball, time travel, and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 😄
