OK So, a few days ago I stumbled upon these russian kids climbing cranes and performing death defying acts.

The crazy part is there have been no incidents as of yet, it's been going on for quite a while, Im only hoping death arrives for these clowns when they least expect it.

Sooner or later one of these guys are gonna fuck up

It still blows my mind outta proportions. I actually was hyperventillating watching them do these things at such heights

It'd be tragic if anything happened. I think it's tragic enough that they feel they have so little to live for or so much to prove that they'll do these things.

It's bad enough watching when you KNOW nothing is going to happen to them :S

One question - why are they doing it?

There are safer ways to climb there, and I have seen much saner videos. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhD1sgNU8DQ - like this).

There are spectacular photo sets (like this one: http://dedmaxopka.livejournal.com/20372.html, this place is rather close to my home) from bridges and tall buildings and one can do it safely. But I have also seen photo with someone standing on their hands on the same place on that bridge.

What is the point of doing it in such a way?

Why do they climb Mount Everest? Because it's there.

Back when I was in college and the Vietnam War protests were all the rage on campus,

A new science building was under construction and they had a 120 foot high construction crane (those things on box frames you see rising in the elevator shafts)...

Well one night, some students climbed to the top and out on the beam to lower a large banner about the war.

The firemen who were called to climb the ladders and get that silly kid down, told the security men, pittsburgh police to shut up and not say a owrd or make any sign they were down at the base waiting.

Why, they were asked, did they do that?

Because if the young man was in any way afraid of heights, screaming at him to stop would only make him look down and get scared and quite possibly "freeze" in fear. So it was best to wait until he was done. Give the victory of the banner until the crane crew who knew and understood heights and that crane came to work and took it down. None of the firemen wanted to climb 100 feet off the ground after a scared and panicked kid. Yelling was not the best course of action, waiting quietly was the best course.

So while I look at these guys and hope nothing happens and wish they would stop taking chances, they are young and the young believe that they are invulnerable and can't get hurt.

I understand the desire to climb there.

I climbed some places, that I shouldn't have (like the university roof and attic, while it was being repaired).

We climbed inside an old fortress wall in Oreshek, lighting our way with camera flashes, despite the signs, that it was not safe.

That was reasonably safe. What those kids are doing is NOT safe in any way. That I do not understand.
