Jacob Riis

Like Paolo, our own Dark Lord, Jacob Riis was a photographer. Riis was also

a social reformer, crusading journalist and a muckraker in the late 1800's of New York City.

Riis photographed the worst elements of the New York City slums including the dark streets, tenement buildings, state beer dives and he documented the hardships faced by the poor.

In 1890, Riis wrote his first book, "How The Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York". The book described the poor conditions in the tenement buildings that had failed due to the greed and neglect of the wealthy that owned them. His book led to a decade of improvement on the Lower East Side including better sewers, garbage collection and indoor plumbing.

In 1891, Riis published a five column newspaper article entitled "Some Things We Drink" that said much of the city's water supply was tainted with sewer water and was risking an outbreak of disease. Due to the public uproar of this article, NYC purchased areas around New Groton Reservoir and saved New Yorkers from an epidemic of cholera.

Riis had his bad points too: he was overly critical of Jews, Italians and the Irish.

I do kids' sports and the occasional wedding. Nothing I do is going to move the Earth.

Au contraire mon ami, I'd wager when the Dark Lord gets his dander up, many offenders in the EA tremble in fear - and rightly so.
