Medical professionals failing transitioning people

Today there was an interesting and horrifying piece in my paper about the reactions that transsexuals have met from the medical professionals that are supposed to be helping them.

The real trans scandal is not the failings of one doctor but cruelty by many (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree ... ansdocfail)

Synopsis: those seeking to transition, or transitioning, meet a degree of, I can only say, contempt that is just inconceivable from those supposed to be giving them professional services in the process. To quote just the last paragraph:

Surely, now, even those with little or no direct experience of trans issues must realise that the real problem is not the chimera of regret and regretters so eagerly sought after by the tabloid press, but the diet of mundane disrespect dished out daily by doctors the length and breadth of the country. Surely they must. Mustn't they?

I bring this up here because a number of people come to EA as part of finding out about transition and this might be worth discussion.

Sad to report, but this is one of the reasons why I decided to go DIY. I'm scared stiff of the medical establishment's prejudices and delays and legal hoops. Not to mention how damned expensive it is in this stupid country, with no guarantee whatsoever of results... lengthy delays at best, possible outright refusal at worst.

When I tried to discuss transitioning to a eunuch with my doctor the first thing she did was send me to a psychiatrist for psych evaluation. She thought I was nuts even though I have totally non functioning atrophied balls and have been on HRT for years.
