The NOT Political, Gold, Silver & Suckers Investment Thread

Post by moi621 (imported) »

These are interesting times in the Gold / Silver markets.

Gold took a spike and Silver did not follow increasing the ratio to to 1 : 55

Meanwhile the Dow went up 308.

Which is the "suckers bet"? Money in the bank vs inflation?

Any - - NOT political discourse is welcome.

BTW A friend got a job where he can score American Gold Eagles with minimal coin markup.

I bought 12, 0.1 oz American Gold Eagles for nearly as much as buying 1, 1.0 oz .

I figure I may need "Change". And forty to sixty Silver pieces being too bulky.

The Silver American Eagles were one of my best gift ideas. No one wanted a cash substitute.

There would be many more millionaires and billionaires in the world if the people closely tied to gold and silver had any kind of a successful track record predicting the prices. You probably are as good with Playmates running the show.

I will have to look into buying gold coins for gifts. There is a unique beauty to gold. The other thing I really like are quality emeralds. The color just does something for me. You might want to look at gems as a store of value.

All markets seem to be retreating from unqualified exuberance.

Arab - suggest you stay with American Eagles that can be ID'ed.

I always liked the beauty of Black Hills Gold, with all three shades of Gold.

Too bad the Lakota do not mint a coin. Only jewelry.

Gold has a place in any investment portfolio, regardless of the state of the economy. It's an insurance policy.

Gold has been trending very slowly down since last October. October through May has for many decades been the time when stocks do best; June through September when they do worst. Gold traditionally tends to move inverse to stocks, as befits insurance, so the recent slight decline may be no more than seasonal.

When there's a crisis, or at least a sharp fall in stocks, the "insurance" kicks in and gold rises. When times are normal and there's no sense of crisis, gold has recently been moving with stocks, because then it may feel like any other investment, especially to the many new buyers, who may be less familiar with gold's role as a hedge. This makes gold harder to buy. The rule used to be buy when times are good. Now the rule seems to be buy when times are OK, but not very good, because gold will soar with soaring stocks.

Silver usually moves in the same direction as gold, only far more volatile. When gold rises, you can make more with silver; when gold falls, you can lose more with silver.

Re coins - now that gold and silver have gone up so far, they've taken over most of the value of coins. Don't pay more than a small premium over the metal value for coins, or you'll never recover that premium.

I hate it when it turns out like that.

Bobover raises good points, but I would still consider buying gold coins as a gift because of the beauty.

A 1/10 oz gold coin sold online for $200 when Gold was about $1,660.

I scored mine at $180 and I regard that as a good deal.

The coin is recognizable Gold / Silver. And the American Eagle is American currency.

One could save a few buck buying the Austrian coin, a few more bucks as a bar and not a coin,

or a coin made by "who are they".

It is my intention to stay with American Eagles.
