The Redtails were the nickname of the 332nd Fighter Group of World War Two. These pilots stood out mainly because of their accomplishments:
16,000 combat sorties
111 German planes shot down
150 German planes destroyed on the ground
950 railroad cars destroyed
And they sank one Nazi destroyer
They flew fighter escort for allied bombing raids and they never lost a single bomber under their protection.
As a military unit, they won 150 DFC's, 744 Air Medals, 8 Purple Hearts and 14 Bronze Stars.
Oh, and by the way, they were all African Americans
