Blood is blood, however, the U.S. military was too ignorant to realize that during World War Two.

In 1941, the U.S. Department of War issued a directive ordering the American Red Cross NOT to mix blood and plasma donations from black and white donors when they were being given to U.S. military personnel.

How dumb is that?

The directive ended in 1949.

All the stories I've heard as to the extent of segregation during this time especially in certain areas is actually pretty amazing to me. Most people today would never understand the significance of a Hispanic upon going into a restroom in say Lubbock, Texas remove his hat and show his hair off to a lighter skinned black man whose hat had accidentally been bumped off by the toilet stall door as he was leaving.

(Oh yeah, and often times there was no "colored" places to go.)

For good or bad the military often chooses the easy way out of ethical dilemmas.

It was easier to pretend the blood was different than to fight public perception and demagoguery.

Same was true later with homosexuality.

And with female combat.

And to pretend the Japanese-Americans were dangerous.

That was by Executive order of President Harry Truman.

Unfortunately, DAMNED TRUE!

It turns out that Blood bankers were the most HEARTLESS of all...

Been looking for the Discovery Channel documentary, the 4 - hour (or so) entitled "A Time of AIDS"... It was a very informative documentary that seemed to be 'ripped off' by the movie "...And the Band Played On...."

Nasty period in history...
