More than two dozen people, mostly elementary school children, were shot and killed at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school this morning, federal and state sources tell ABC News.

The massacre involved two gunmen and prompted the town of Newtown to lock down all of its schools and draw SWAT teams to the school, authorities said today.

One shooter is dead and a manhunt is on for a second gunman. Police are searching cars. One shooter was described as a 24-year-old armed with four weapons and wearing a bullet proof vest, sources told ABC News.

It's unclear how many people have been shot, but 25 people, mostly children are dead, multiple federal and state sources tell ABC News. That number could rise, officials said.

President Obama was briefed on the shooting by FBI Director Bob Mueller.

It is the worst shooting in a U.S. elementary school in recent memory and exceeds the carnage at 1999 Columbine High School shooting in which 13 died and 24 were injured.

The Newtown shooting comes just three days after masked gunman Jacob Roberts opened fire in a busy Oregon, mall killing two before turning the gun on himself.

Today's shooting occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, which includes 450 students in grades from kindergarten through fourth grade. The town is located about 12 miles east of Danbury.

State Police received the first 911 call at 9:41a.m. and immediately began sending emergency units from the western part of the state. Initial 911 calls stated that multiple students were trapped in a classroom, possibly with a gunman, according to a Connecticut State Police source.

A photo from the scene shows a line of distressed children being led out of the school.

Three patients have been taken to Danbury Hospital, which is also on lockdown, according to the hospital's Facebook page.

"Out of abundance of caution and not because of any direct threat Danbury Hospital is under lockdown," the statement said. "This allows us simply to focus on the important work at hand."

Newtown Public School District secretary of superintendent Kathy June said in a statement that the district's school were locked down because of the report of a shooting. "The district is taking preventive measures by putting all schools in lockdown until we ensure the safety of all students and staff."

State police sent SWAT team units to Newtown.

All public and private schools in the town are on lockdown.

"We have increased our police presence at all Danbury Public Schools due to the events in Newtown. Pray for the victims," Newtown Mayor Boughton tweeted.

State emergency management officials said ambulances and other units were also en route and staging near the school.

A message on the school district website says that all afternoon kindergarten is cancelled today and there will be no mid-day bus runs.

How the hell could anyone be soulless enough to do a shooting at an ELEMENTARY school? God, I know normal shootings are bad enough, but that's just unfathomable. WHY? Why would anyone do such a terrible thing? (I guess this one hits me a lot harder than things like the Colorado theater shooting because I was an education major, and I love teaching and playing with kids of that age so much.)

February 2010 – A professor opened fire 50 minutes into at a Biological Sciences Department faculty meeting at the University of Alabama, killing three colleagues and wounding three others

January 2011 - a gunman opened fire at a public gathering outside a grocery in Tuscon, Arizona, killing six people including a nine-year-old girl and wounding at least 12 others. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was severely injured with a gunshot to the head.

July 2012 - Masked gunman opens fire at midnight cinema screen of new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 and injuring 58. Suspect James Holmes is arrested by oplice and awaiting trial.

August 2012 - Gunman kills six people at SIkh temple in Wisconsin before being shot dead by police. Suspect is named as white supremacists Wade Michael Page.

Things have changed since Lennon was shot. If you want to be famous for carnage you have to do something to stand out from an increasingly faceless crowd of mass murderers; It's hard to shock a generation growing up on Saw movies and torture porn. Hence killing 18 children at an elementary school.

I cannot remember being so pissed.

The last time I was close, it was when a local drug dealer shot and killed a cop that I knew and then shot himself. The cop's wife was a childhood friend of my children. In the comment section of the local newspaper some lowlife said that he wanted to know why the autopsy revealed that the body of the perpetrator had 72 bullets in it.

I was so pissed.

In the comment section I replied, "...Because that's all that the police had in their weapons without reloading..."

This one got me pretty good. I'm not really quite capable of holding so much horror in my mind. 20 small children murdered, their lives ended, their parents' lives destroyed, their friends and classmates traumatized... it's too much. The last horrible news story that hit me so hard was the death of 50 children in Egypt when their bus was hit by a train, and that was an accident. This was someone who apparently hated his mother so much he couldn't just kill her; he had to kill the children she taught.
