World to End: Stage Deli Closes
Posted: Sun Dec 02, 2012 1:31 am
In what may well be a harbinger of the End of Days (could those Mayans have got it right?), New York's Stage Deli announced its closing. It's truly the end of an era. I've eaten there my whole life, starting as a kid with my parents. The short Jewish waiters holding heavy trays over their heads and crying "Hot! Hot!" to warn those in their way will not be forgotten. Neither will my first bowl of matzoh ball soup. It was an Institution. Of course, the Carnegie Deli, the best in the universe, is only a block away, but it's still a blow. Deli aficionados stopped eating at the Stage when busloads of tourists began showing up several years ago. Show biz celebrities also quit the place, so the end could be seen. But still, it's like a death in the family. Memorial donations of corned beef sandwiches will be gratefully received.

NYC's famous Stage Deli closes, owner cites rent

The famous Stage Deli in Manhattan has closed. Visitors on Friday were greeted with a hand-written sign on the door that said "Thanks for 75 years!"
The deli, on Seventh Avenue near 54th Street, got its start 75 years ago. It was known for overstuffed sandwiches named for celebrities.
It was popular with Broadway audiences.
Co-owner Paul Zolenge says the dining landmark had been struggling for some time.
He told The New York Times that yet another rent increase was expected when the lease ended in a few months.
