I would ask for permission to (partially) translate one story of the "Last Night Day"(OR "Final Night") series into Chinese.

I want to translate any one (short) story of the series for SAMPLING purpose. I have NO specification for any particular story. So notify just me which one can be (partially) translated.

Are you wanting to repost it HERE once translated?

It CAN be done but I don't see why.

I was just trying to introduce this kind of literature creation to writers of my language.

I want to adress:

I want to post the translation in a website in language of Traditional Chinese(zh-TW) for Non-commercial purpose, for introducing this kind of stories to writers of my language.

The website I want to post is a strictly managed website and take serious attitude toward erotic story writing. I wanted to introduce the stories of "Eunuch Arcive" on that site but they only accept opinions from people with samples.

The traslation itself might be an SHORTENED SAMPLET. Structural modification might be made to shorten the length and maintain coherence. I will address that the before the story.

I will also address the status of the original story and the fact that there are mutiple versions of the theme.

To put some cultural context to this request, Taiwan was once the world center for pirated translations and copies of western materials. GuaiT has taken the proper ethical tack and asked permission to translate and repost a story from the Eunuch Archive in Chinese. As has already been discussed on this board, this happens far too seldom even within the U.S. I commend him for his request, and hope that PB will respond with his approval. It is certainly an ambitious project to start with a story that long, though it is certainly one of the best in the history of the Archive and would be culturally easier to translate than many.

The completed work probably cannot be posted here. I suspect that the Chinese character set is not supported. And I doubt that there are more than two or three readers of the Archive who can read Chinese well enough to try reading something where the English version is already available. I hope that the web address for the Chinese language version will be posted, though. I may even try to puzzle my way through it for language practice.

If you don't hear from the Author in 5 business days, go ahead and do it. Just put a comment in and perhaps a link BACK to here when you do it. Make sure that you credit the Author properly, credit the Archive, and thanks for asking.

PB while I appreciate the sentimate, and the administators are not above criticism I won't have one of my assistants criticized in that way, with cursing and accusations.

If you had said 'I don't think 5 days is long enough to wait ... ' then that is a fair critism. People quit running sites like this over comments like yours. I hope once you have had a chance to reflect and cool down a bit you will see where I am coming from.

There are many stories on the Archive with NO contact information or for whatever reason the author is unreachable.

What Paolo stated is the official Archive position and has my 100% backing.

If after making a good faith effort to contact an author and failing to do so, a person wants to continue a story or otherwise encorporate themes or characters into a story of their own they should feel free to do so.

Anyone who wants to provide us with a translation of a story should feel free to do so.

I love and respect each and every author who submits work to the Archive, but yes, you do give up a measure of control when you use this medium to publish your work.

If authors decide they can not live with that and stop submitting then I guess it will be time to close the Archive. Until then we will be the best stewards we can and, as Paolo did we will encourage would-be-users of the material to make every effort to contact the author and get his or her permission.

You are very welcome to translate my stories into Chinese, just so long as you credit the original writer and do your best to make the translation as faithful to the spirit of the original as you can. PS: I wish that I could read Chinese so that I could read LND (or whichever story you select) in the translation, and see how it works in a Chinese context. That is something I had not thought of.

(This time I have added two asterisks instead of the original letters. And that one word - completely justified under the circumstances - is the entire extent of the "cussing" I indulged in. But my entire post was deleted! This is not something that fits into the wonderful tradition of fair play and openness that the Eunuch Archive has championed over the years.)

I stand 100% behind my original post, now edited into nothing by my good friend Bryan, who this time has made a sad mistake. That was not fair, Bryan, nor justifiable. I am surprised and saddened that you did that. If it is impossible to contact the original author of a story, and a genuine effort has been made for a reasonable length of time - i.e., months, not days - then fair enough. But neither of these circumstances apply here. I remain a moderately frequent visitor to the Archive Forums (sometimes every day, sometimes once every week or three) and anyway, Bryan has my email address.

" I agree with this, but where was the "good faith effort"? There wasn't one. Permission was simply granted.

I have reflected, Bryan, but I have not cooled down. This hijacking of someone else's work is a serious issue. (In the particular case, Paolo simply gave the same permission that I would have done myself - he and I have exchanged emails and I think from that he knows me well enough to guess what I would (and did) say - but it is not his right to make that decision.

I repeat my original point. Hopefully this time it won't be removed.

Paolo, you do not have the right to make that decision. Only the original author has that right. If you guys really think that you have the right to give out any permissions you want to material that other people wrote, then I am both very surprised and deeply saddened. This could be the end of the Archive as we know it. If you really believe that you have the right to hand out permissions to my work and the work of other Archive authors without their permission then I ask you to remove all my stories from the Archive imediately. I am very happy to post my stories here (few though they may be), but I will not post them ever again if it has suddenly become EA policy that the Archive, simply by hosting the story, somehow aquires the right to determine any further future use of it. That right belongs to the author, no-one else.

And you do not have the right openly challenge ME on an open board on a site that I devote several hours per week, sometimes several hours per day, to help keep running for YOUR enjoyment and education, or sexual outlets - be that as it may, I really don't care to know.

Do YOU honestly think that you, or the Authors who post here, actually expect anyone to respect their work and/or copyrights? Dream on ... I've had my stories reposted to other sites without my permission, translated, spread around, credit given or not ... and my conclusion was finally this - it only broadened the base of readers and got me more feedback. It's also exposed me to other forums and other lines of thought that have only improved my education.

Posting a story here to the Archive is much like parking your car at the mall and leaving the keys in it. Someone's bound to see it and take it for a drive. If this metaphor disturbs you, well, that's how it is. The Internet is probably the last, best refuge of Anarchy left in the World, and personally, I enjoy it.

Also, as if there's anything that the Staff can do to keep people from 'stealing' stories and doing with them as they see fit. There isn't.

At least this person had the common COURTESY and asked to do it. In my opinion, liking the story enough to want to share it with a larger audience separated by a culture gap is a vast, flattering compliment. As far as doling out permission, do you think that I act unilaterally in such matters? Believe it or not, Bboy, Talula and I actually communicate. And we do it well. We discuss new policies and changes BEFORE we implement them.

Stop and think for a moment how this board would look, or if it would exist at ALL, if no one moderated it or set policies. As Bboy said, it's people like you who cause boards like this to shut down. Personally, I've just about had it with it anyway. I don't for the LIFE OF ME understand how Bboy has put up with it all these years before he "hired some help." If I had formed this board on my own way back when, you can bet your sweet bippy (read - 'ass') that I would have shut it down long ago, or simply handed it over to someone else and walked away.
