(CNN) -- British rugby league player Paul Wood has lost a testicle after a collision during the English sport's showpiece final at Manchester's Old Trafford stadium on Saturday.

Wood was playing for the Warrington Wolves against Leeds Rhinos in the Super League Grand Final.

The prop sustained the injury one minute into the second half, but managed to play the rest of the match before seeking treatment.

Despite Wood's determined effort, Warrington lost the match 26-18 to 2011 champions Leeds.

Just coming out the hospital to go home... Seriously feel like I've left something?

Paul Wood

"Ruptured my right testicle, got a knee one minute into the second half, had to have it removed," tweeted the 30-year-old father of two.

Showing his sense of humor remained intact, he later tweeted: "Just coming out the hospital to go home... Seriously feel like I've left something?

"Tony Smith (Warrington coach) did say in his pre-match team talk last night 'your balls are on the line here guys!' I didn't think he meant literally."

Rugby League is similar to Rugby Union, although each team has 13 players rather than 15.

In addition to being played in Britain, the sport is also popular is Australia and New Zealand.

That's why the expression

"It takes leather balls to play rugby".

Saw it as a bumper sticker.

If you play rugby long enough, the balls might be like leather.

Or even lost.

Is it against the rules to wear a cup while playing rugby?

If you've ever worn one for extended periods of time, like 6 hours of baseball in a double-header, you'd know! ;)

Yeah, cups were not my nephews' favorite things in the world.

But they do also make interesting nose/septum protectors after sinus surgery - just ask our umpire who had to delay the game because he was laughing so hard.

The FUGS had a song about this jockstrap thing...

you have to get around 30 seconds into it before they ask about jockstraps.

Do You Like Boobs A Lot by the Fugs

It also is covered by THE HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS in their album (eye roll) "Good Taste is Timeless"

(they don't write songs like that anymore)

Jockstraps aren't allowed in rugby for some reason.

One thing I don't understand is why they are always so quick to remove a ruptured testicle. Can't they heal? Why not take a wait and see attitude after stitching it together? It seems like laziness on the doctors'part, probably because they consider testicles redundant (i.e. Because there is two) but I don't think they should be so cavalier about it--one testicle isn't as good from hormone or sperm point of view, you then run the risk of having no backup for future cancer or injury, and for most men the injury would be troubling and embarrassing. Why not try to save it?

Jockstraps and other types of supporter ARE allowed, but are not of much use if you get a knee in the groin because they seem to hold the testicles in just the right position to be crushed.

Personally, I went through all of my school years without one and most of the other boys did as well. A few started to wear swim briefs under their shorts but they were a very small minority.

It was only when I went to college that I became more aware of them.

What about a hard plastic cup which is worn in a jockstrap? A cup does protect the testicles. Are cups allowed in rugby?

There are still other sports, where you´ve got the chance, to damage your testicles seriously.

But not in all cases are protectors usefull.

During the last about 20 or some more years I´ve been working as a professional rider.

Even doing it "English Style" you can´t avoid to hit the saddle sometimes with your balls.

Esspecially if you do show- jumping.

If I see a saddle for "Western Style".... !

I easy can imagine what will happen, if the horse stopps and you don´t.

The horn has exactly the right position to hit you in the groin seriously.

What about playing soccer?

It just happened last weekend in the National German Soccer League.

Even it´s the aim to hit the goal with a ball, you shouldn´t do so with your own balls.

But this was exactly what happened to one player:

He hit the post with his balls.
