I have a "prime time" DVD of a Japanese film, family fare, and it's loaded with stuff that would never be shown on USA TV.

Having lived in Japan, I'd say, yes it can be and is much different from ours. It's been some years since I live there, but then, one could buy beer and liquor from vending machines on the street. There was almost no street crime. One could lose his wallet and have it returned to him with everything still inside it. I left an backpack on the train with an expensive camera, other items, and over $1500 in traveler's checks in it. I went in the train office; they called ahead; and the backpack with everything still in it came back on the next train. Try that in the USA.

No tipping for service given, although some had been corrupted by Americans offering tips and would take tips if offered. I left Japan in 1986, so I don't know whether it's changed since then.

I saw on Japanese TV a young girl, under 10 years old, washing her father's back as he sat naked in the tub. Women were an underclass. Japan was definitely a man's world. Boys were pampered and girls were treated like servants from what I saw.

It's been 26 years since I was there, so I can't say what it's like today, but I doubt it's changed all that much.

Makes me sorry I haven't done more foreign travel. I'd forgotten what I read about how different Japan is.
