Computer slowing

I bought a new Acer a couple of months ago and at first it was lickety split. Now it has slowed down. We had one computer at home which got infected with a virus a couple of weeks ago. I started getting emails from the phone company that I was not complying with their useage agreemeng because we were sending out spam/malaware/viruses. (That is a whole other story about Century Link's wireless modem taking a dump and their new equipment being way too weak to reach most of the house folllowed by the virus drama and many calls to their Indian tech support and getting URL's for software which could help but, unfornately, the websites no longer exist. I don't fault the Indians. I fault Century Link management who gave them their scripts).

I added AVG to the newish computer while trying to resolve the virus issue. Now I occassionally get a small mesage screen from AVG that Windows @ Internet Explorer is using way to much memory and I should shut down and restart Windows. That seems weird to me. Any comments?

I also get semi-regular notices that there are Adobe updates available. Is it possible those are fake and really put a virus on the computer?

Thanks

I get the same thing from AVG on the laptop with Firefox. It's not a virus, it's AVG and what they think a browser should use. Using Task Manager, I sometimes see that Firefox, if left to its own devices, will use up to a gig of RAM and have to be closed.

I'd rather have that than all the spam that Avira throws at me nonstop.

Adobe updates usually pop up on the upper left screen, black box, white letters and trim, with red icons. This is real. Especially if you use Adobe Air for anything; it's very annoying with updates.

Depending on how full your hard drive is, I wouldn't expect the computer to slow down so much, however. Have you installed any new software that might be to blame?

You might also look into CCleaner, which you can get a download.com (CNET). I ran it and flushed a bunch of junk out of the computers.

Another good tool to have is Malwarebytes. Best $15 I ever spent, and it's saved my ass more than once.

Also check your startup file. With a lot of new computers there is a lot of bloatware that came w/ the computer, then as you install all your favorite programs, they all want to install at startup and constantly check for updates so the background programs can keep eating up memory until it severely slows the whole computer. Getting programs, that work just as well loading on call, out of the startup progress can significantly speed up your computer

Here's a quick simple program to see what's in the start up:

P.S. To Transward's post - whenever you update software, it automatically resets it to start when your computer boots up, even if you removed that software from start-up. So check your start-ups after every update. The easy way is to use the System Configuration Utility. Just go to the Start-Up tab. Touch nothing else. Go down the list of software that's turned on at start-up, unchecking unwanted items. Don't touch anything unless you know what it is and you're sure you don't need it.

I have a computer nerd friend. He installed a program that allows him to remotely check out my computer as though he was at the key board physically. He keeps my system going.

A program called CCleaner.com is one of his favorite tricks. He finally installed it on my laptop.

I guess like the Apollo lander it keeps holding too much old information and having a 2202, sort of slow down or freezes. The program cleans it good.
