Every year around July 4th, there are gruesome fireworks injuries. Last year, a man blew off his head. This year, a man blew off a part of his genitals.

A northern Michigan man thought he set off a firework last week, but the firework did not explode as expected.

As the man went to check on the suspected dud, the firework went off just as the man stood over it, reports MLive. The mortar shell exploded between the unidentified man's leg and took off one of his testicles.

The accident happened in Grand Traverse County, and the man was rushed to the hospital. His current condition was not reported.

This year, several serious fireworks injuries have been reported throughout the state, reports MLive. A possible cause may be that the Michigan legislature recently legalized more powerful and dangerous fireworks. While some municipalities have banned certain more powerful fireworks made legal by the state, Acme Township, where the accident occurred, did not pass such a restriction.

You have to be careful when setting off fireworks and you have to be especially careful when there is a suspected dud. If it is revealed that the injured man was careless or drunk when he set off the firework, he may have little legal recourse as he was partly responsible for the accident. However, if it is revealed that the firework was defective in any way, the injured man may be able to sue the fireworks manufacturer.

Fireworks are inherently dangerous objects. But when a firework is defectively made, the injured party may be able to bring a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer. To prove a product was defective, you normally would have to show that it was assembled defectively or that it's design was defective to begin with.

If you or someone you know has suffered a fireworks injury and you suspect that the firework was defective, you may want to contact a product liability attorney to learn your rights.

LOL! Actually, I've had the idea for a long time as a theme for a story I've never gotten around to writing. The central idea is that each day a prisoner is forced to pick an "M-80" salute (a large firecracker). He is then tied up, his penis is banded, the firework is duct-taped to his penis, and the fuse is lit. Of the 100 in the box, 99 are duds, but one is live. The process continues day after day until he either confesses and implicates his co-conspirators or his penis is blown off. My hubby calculates that he has an even chance of surviving about 11 times.

Lucky people in Michigan. In Colorado there is a $1000 fine for having fireworks or shooting them off.

The police have vigorously enforced this law.

Sitting on my elderly parents yard at the base of Cheyenne Mountain about five miles from the Colorado Springs burn area which burned over 300 houses , (many of them million dollar McMansions, ) I would be in favor of fining them and blowing their testicles off. Despite a couple of days of thunderstorms and flash flooding, it's still a tinderbox around here.

Despite growing up here, I forget just how beautiful this area is, Helen Hunt wrote the song "America the Beautiful" just up Cheyenne Canon from here at a waterfall named after her. It was painful to watch my childhood playground burn on the news every evening.

It seems to me that fireworks and certain people are a poor combination. Would he do the same thing if it was a grenade or mortor shell that had failed to go off? I fear the answer is he probably would. He could easily have ended up a Eunuch but that is not the worst thing that could have happened to him. I now realize that in my case it is not a disaster but a change for the better and by the way fireworks were not involved.

In Germany we´ve got a little poem for children:

Messer, Gabel, Schere, Licht

sind für kleine Kinder nicht.

Means, that knifes, forks ,scissors and fire could be dangerous for little children.

We see sometimes also for grown up children.

Yeah, the dumb thing about 4th of July is that it is in July. Definitely a bad time to be playing with fireworks in most areas. In the Bay Area though, I find it really irksome that so many of the cities have restrictions to the point that even sparklers can be illegal. Furthermore, due to budget cuts most of the cities don't even put on public shows. So it basically forces people to flaunt the law anyway.
