Some improvements

Hi folks.

I've made some 'improvements' or at least I hope they are improvements.

Fixed the cookie issue and set up a redirect. You need to go to www.eunuchworld.org (http://www.eunuchworld.org) not just eunuchworld.org. If you want the "remember me" to work you might want to deeplink to http://www.eunuchworld.org/s_index.php . I'll try to get that working soon too.

Rewrote the hit-counter routine though I don't know why it didn't work right (for those inclined I changed $hit++ to $hit=$hit+1). Shouldn't make a difference but I'm pulling at straws on it.

Went through the emailaddress on every active story and normalized the unusable email addresses so if you are the author, named "anonymous" who had thier email listed as anon@anon.anon.anony-mous.com it is now listed as "None Listed". All old eunuch.org accounts are still there but obviously inactive and unuseable.

Why did I do this? Because of that wonderful suggestion Mr. "Fuck off" Nickolai made. Next to each author's name is the email they left provided if it is even close to reasonable. Doesn't mean that it works. It was something that I wanted to get done.

One of the things I've had planned and don't know when I'll be able to do it is to create an "Author's control panel" where we can tie each author to thier userid and thus allow them to change current email addresses. Ahh, pipe dreams.

I'll be back at work here.

tal

p.s. This post is dedicated to Mr. "Fuck off' Nickolai who I honestly believe told us to "Fuck off" as a gesture of friendship and love so in the spirit of this love I would love to say to Nickolai, "fuck off to you also" (with twice to 3x the vigor).

You sir, are a Rock Star.

Thanks again for all your hard work and effort. There isn't enough recognition on this board for all you do.

I'm happy to wait as long as it takes for the archive to be complete. It is already head and shoulders above any other story site I know of on the net.

All because of you!

For the record, I have a little Blackberry Playbook that replaces my old iPad. (Nicer size to carry around, supports flash, better all around than the iPad) On that little machine, I can easily sign into the Fiction Archive, and can hit a button to read the stories like ebooks. With the current setup all the stories look great and are beautifully formatted. The old archive didn't read half as nicely.

On my regular computer, the text is easier to read, more scale-able to different size screens. It is a better reading experience all together.

Having all the stories in the same format is a big advantage to anything we do with them in the future.

Even with limited time to be able to donate to the cause, you've done wonders, and people should be very thankful.

I know I am.

Thank you Tal, and all involved with the change over from the old system, I know that it was not an easy nor a quick task. I know I've not said thank you for all your work and to the all the authors for their time.

Thanks to all of you.

Ken

Thanks for the changes....even if I don't know what they mean. But, I can figure it out. If I can't, I 'll get somebody to clue me in. Now, if sometime in the future the "Favorites list (limited to 25 titles) can be changed so some you have listed can be deleted without cleaning the whole slate and starting over. No hurry on that though.

You went one hell of a ways with that old VW.

The new story site may one day be that Mustang GT, it certainly has the potential. Doesn't mean we forget how much the old VW meant to us.

There's no denying we've got a ways to go yet. Right now we've got four good wheels and a motor. The important thing is we now have a better frame, and more can be built onto it in the future.

I, like many others, still miss many of the old search option, and a few of the old features. We're going to get there though... in time.

I know I sure have a better appreciation for all you did with the old story archive. I've only been at it a short while, but long enough to realize how important you were to keeping the old site readable at all.

You did it for a long time with little appreciation. I get that now. I've got a long way to go before I'm up to your standard. I may eventually be ready for a light-saber of my very own. For now, I'm just a Padawan among Masters.

Hear hear, can't say thank-you enough to all involved in getting the Archive back. As they say all good things are worth waiting for. Cheers.

What old search option?

What old search option?

Couple of things. There was an option to look at just the stories submitted in the last 7 to 60 days. That was useful in finding stories just added to the archive. At the time, I'd only visit the story archive once every few weeks, and it was nice to narrow down what I'd missed.

Also, there was a basic search bar on the lower right hand side of the main screen for searching the various titles. It was occasionally useful for finding stories where you could only remember a part of the name. I didn't use it often, and as I remember it only ever half worked, but it was still handy from time to time.

I'm in no rush to have these things return. Frankly I'm pretty happy with how things look right now. I just think they might be things to think about in the future, once bigger concerns like getting all the old stories restored have been accomplished. (That's my fault because I haven't been dedicating enough time to the task lately.) And of course, whenever you have the time to donate to the cause.

I'm in zero rush, and as far as I'm concerned, if those features never return, we still have the best story site of its kind on the net already.

I'm in no position to bother you to create features for the imaginary archive in my mind, when I'm slacking on my own duties of editing up the old stories.

I'll shut up now, and go back to the salt mines. Those stories aren't going to edit themselves, no matter how much I wish they would.
