I wonder if this is true

The painful incident happened at 61-year-old Mr Lozanov's flat just outside the city of Plovdiv, where the two had been getting hammered for most of the day.

Mr Lozanov's friend Lyubomir Todorov, 43, decided it would be a great idea to take a decorative - but very real and very sharp - samurai sword hanging on the wall to demonstrate his flawless control of a weapon while intoxicated.

The result was pretty much inevitable, as Mr Todorov began swiping wildly with the sword.

Our unfortunate victim picks up the story: 'He told me he was a martial arts expert - he was whizzing it around his head.

'I went to try and take it off him before he caused an accident - and then he slashed it in front of me.

'I thought he'd missed but then I felt a burning pain and collapsed. He'd sliced the sword through my trousers and lopped off my penis.'

Although clearly sad and very unfortunate, the story is also somewhat heartening - because Mr Lozanov campaigned for his pal's release from prison, after he was given a six-year sentence over the incident.

He did have something of an ulterior motive, though - to get Mr Todorov back into employment in order to raise the cash to pay for a brand, spanking new chopper.

'People tell me I was noble to get him released but I want him to get a job so he can pay the compensation I am due,' Mr Lozanov continued.

'There is nothing I can do to change what has happened - it's in the past. I just hope now that, by helping him, it will help me.'

It story seems a bit odd. I trained in iaido (samurai sword martial art). The swords are of course very dangerous, but they do most of their cutting by slicing (i.e. running the blade along to cut) rather than hacking. You can imagine what I mean if you remember the exaggerated cuts in a movie where the blade first makes contact, then is sort of pulled to do a dramatic slice. This is in contrast to other types of swords such as claymores and scimitars which are more for hacking (which is why they are often heavy at the pointy end). A samurai sword can still hack, but usually only if there is good resistance -- i.e. a strike down on the shoulder or outstretched limb. My point is that to really cut a flaccid penis, especially through jeans, you'd have to purposefully slice it -- I don't think a random swipe would easily do it. Furthermore, the way a flaccid penis usually hangs, it would be hard to really contact it without cutting the thigh seriously.

I guess it is still possible, but I think it pretty unlikely that it happened as described. Maybe if the guy was naked and erect ...

I own two of these swords. I used to own three, but I broke one. Fortunately it was the cheap decorative one, and not the drop forged, hand sharpened ones.

I broke the cheap one, not because it wasn't sharp, but because I tried to hack with the thing. Imagine my surprise when the handle broke apart, and the blade came straight back at me. That's also when I discovered my cheap sword was cheap for a reason, it didn't have the full tang. (metal all the way through the handle.)

It was sharp enough to chop what I wanted, but I didn't know that you have to make a sweeping motion with the blade when you swing it. You draw a kind of elegant 'J' shape with the blade as you swing. You are supposed to draw it down and away as you also swing forward. I didn't do that. I just chopped like it was an axe. I'm fine, nothing cut, nothing lost, All fingers and toes accounted for, but it could have been worse.

I have since tried with the good swords, and MAN. When you slice properly with them, they cut like a hot knife through butter. Of course the toughest thing I've tried them on is a bundle of sticks from my yard work, tied together. They are beautiful works of art, but they scare the bejeebus out of me.

I haven't taken them down off of my mantle in ages.

Long story short, The story could have happened, but if it did, it is more likely to have been deliberate, than accidental.

P.S. I'm not trained in any martial art. There should be a law against idiots like me owning weapons like that. Ah, well. I still enjoy just looking at them.

If the website metro is to be trusted, then it most likely is true. Courts do not sentence people on a whimp. However, this metro website is the only one I found to relate this. There are a few other websites but they mostly or all point back to metro as the source.

I don't think any British tabloid-style paper can be particularly trusted. Also most news out of Eastern European countries can't be trusted. Looking again at the picture of the victim, I again think there is something wrong with the story. The guy has a fair bit of a belly. Unless he was erect and the sword strike aimed purposefully I really don't see how you could swing a sword to just chop off a flaccid penis in that guy's pants and miss his belly and thighs etc.
