TO forgive and forget is a lot to ask when Martin Douglas thinks of his ex.
It isnt so much that the neighbours might hear Maria Topps drunken shouting.
Or that she smashed his wardrobe by putting her foot through it in a red-mist frenzy.
The point of no return came when Martin was lying in hospital, having lost two pints of blood, and praying that surgeons could sew back his testicles.
Nightmare
Topp, 43, did the damage with her teeth at the height of a boozy squabble. She left Martin to suffer, bleeding and in agony, on his bedroom floor.
He had to call for help and believes that when an ambulance at last got him to hospital he was minutes from bleeding to death.
Martin, 45, speaking for the first time about his nightmare exclusively to The People, said: If I could buy her anything for Christmas this year it would be a dog muzzle and a lead.
Forklift driver Martin continued: I used to have a really high sex drive but now nothing. I havent been with another woman since.
Im not ready for that yet. I can look at a woman and think shes sexy but I dont want to go and talk to her or anything.
I suppose in time that may change with the right person.
Medics successfully patched Martin up in a three-hour op finished off with 19 stitches.
He spent three days in hospital and was left with a 4½-inch scar on his scrotum. But the mental damage runs much deeper.
Now he carries a panic alarm and has security devices on the windows of his city centre flat.
And he told us he has survived a deliberate overdose of pills.
Martin shuddered as he remembered the night he was mutilated. He said: I still cant understand why she did it. It is unforgivable.

When Topps case came up, the court heard they had both been drinking heavily for a considerable time.
Martin recalled: We had been to three pubs. Maria had been drinking quite fast. She always did. But she had been quite loving, cuddly and caring. Back at my flat Maria got into bed first, then I got in and tried to cuddle up to her.
She mumbled something and turned and scratched my face. Her words were, Get off.
Then she started shouting. I was worried my neighbours would be woken up by her screaming and bawling so I asked her to go. She went into a rage.
She smashed the wardrobe by putting her foot through it.
The next thing we were on the floor. Maria bit me on the arm and I pushed her off me.
Then I felt this nasty horrible pain. I looked down and couldnt believe it. My right testicle was hanging down to my knee.
The amount of blood was unbelievable. I wrapped a towel round myself to stem the blood, then I fell unconscious.
When I came to I said to her, Have you rang an ambulance? She said, No. So I dialled 999 while she just sat there.
The pain was like steam from a red-hot kettle burning you.
At the hospital the doctors said that in another 20 minutes I would have been dead.
Convictions
Shortly after I woke up on a ward Maria rang and asked if a friend could come and pick up her things. She didnt say sorry.
I was shocked. I made my mind I never wanted to see or talk to Maria ever again.
Earlier this month at Newcastle Crown Court mum-of-four Topp admitted grievous bodily harm.
She had previous convictions for attacking an ex-lover with a glass and for dishonesty.
Recorder Robin Mairs told her: You bit his scrotum with enough force to rip his skin.
There was no lasting physical damage but the mental scars will take some while to heal.

She was given a 12-month suspended sentence and 150 hours of unpaid work. The court also banned her from contacting Martin for five years. Topp, who has three grandchildren, came to court in tight black jeans and carrying a handbag with handcuff links.
Martin claimed that as she left the building she turned and said to him: F****** arsehole.
Part-time DJ Martin, who has children Steven, 22, Amy, 19, and Sarah, 13, also claimed: Ive scars next to my eye, above my ear and on the back of my head, all from her biting or attacking me with stilettos in the past.
She once burnt my bum with a lighter. In 2007 she bit my testicles but I had jeans on so I was only badly bruised.
Our first three years were fine but she became controlling. She knew I loved her and took advantage. She drained me.
Martin, from Newcastle, admitted: In April I was so low I took an overdose.
But the court case marked a turning point. Martin said: Now Im feeling better and getting on with my life. Im a bit sore but the doctor says that will ease.
Id like to meet another woman one day and I hope shes trustworthy, loving and caring. Nothing like Maria.
