We just got back from the Christmas treck to the midwest. I was kind of surprised by seeing in other states several cars and trucks with Texas plates packed full with belongings. People obviously moving. This morning I went down to see a friend and stopped at a market on the interstate north of Phoenix. I like stopping in small markets and that particular one does have the Wall Street Journal, IBD, a local rag, etc., so it is a good coffee, piss and paper stop. They were cleaning it out. Tomorrow is the last day for them, then they are closing for good. When I got back, it was haircut time. I mentioned it to my barber. He said that his business had fallen off noticably in the last 6 months and he was barely bringing in enough to hang on. He said that recently he had been in the popular Mexican restaurant up the street and was the only customer at 6 PM.
I get the feeling that we are going thru another wave of the creative destruction of a free market system.
How are things looking in other parts of the country?
