African circumciser cuts off boy's penis

A 70 year old circumciser, locally referred to us wanzam, has provided more evidence for the campaign against their practice.

Wanzam Abdullah may have to relocate from his Maamobi base here in Accra after his latest act went bad.

He is accused of peeling off more than the foreskin of a four month old baby.

Crime Officer at the Kotobabi Police Command ASP John Koffie told Joy News the wanzam claims he had problems seeing properly.

According to the police, the baby was struggling during the circumcision exercise, and with a poor grip from the parents, the wanzam’s knife went overboard cutting a huge chunk of the baby’s penis.

“The man has severed the penis, the whole thing is cut off, left with a small piece; the most sensitive part is removed; [albeit] he is able to urinate alright.”

The certified wanzan with over 20 years of experience, the police said, would be charged for negligently causing harm.

The little boy was sent to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.
