proxy servers
Anyone ever use a proxy server to get past blocked sites on a company or school computer? I have been using proxy servers for years to surf anonymously with great success.Never tried it to get past blocked Internets.

No. I've never used one. There have been a few times when I should have / could have used one. Do instruct, please!

Re: proxy servers
I use VPN's. It let's me get around prohibitions on things like being unable to watch the TV shows a foreign network places online they wish to only be seen on computers in their own country. All I have to do is make their computer think mine is in their country and, VOILA, access to the show.

Re: proxy servers
At school we either used a VPN or a random proxy site. Tor is nice but has its own problems due to its erratic nature.

Re: proxy servers
Big news! Can you use a proxy to get a bittorrent download? How would you do that?

You would simply log into your VPN (proxy) and download from there. While it is certainly possible to find out your real IP address even if you are using a VPN, it does allow for a bit more privacy when you are on the net do it. I can set it so that I'm seen in many different places at one time, all outside of my home country.
Think of it this way when downloading a torrent - It's like being in a group getting chased by a bear (Like the recording artists, MPA, etc.) you don't have to be the fastest one, you just have to be faster than one other person to avoid getting mauled. The people who go after the members of the public who download like easy pickings, they don't want to have to figure out how many places you've bounced your download off of. So they are more likely to go after the person that downloads from their home IP address instead of using a proxy.
Get a proxy, you're faster than that person. Voila! You just outran the person not using a proxy and avoided getting eaten by the bear.

Re: proxy servers
Thanks, Losethem! What's confusing me is that bittorrent clients like Vuze are programs on my computer, not websites. I've looked at a few proxies, and they ask for a URL. How would I make this work with Vuze? Please excuse me for being dense.
