As it turned out the guys concerned weren't too upset. David had long had fantasies along those lines so he was delighted to have it all taken out of his hands, so to speak. Rupert had served 14 years of forced labour in a vacuum suit on Ganymede and was so pleased not to go back. Jed was initially devastated but he soon adapted. To compensate he grew the best carrots on Cubella. And Reta loved her grown up pets. There were quite a few women who envied her.

Just read it. Great story! I loved the names, Wumpsy and Rumpo. I also enjoyed the vision of a more peaceful society that could possibly exist under matriarchy where males were "treated" and kept as pets.
