Please take time to edit your stories. Check spelling and grammar.

We should give people a break when it comes to spelling, word usage and grammar. The english language has: many words with multiple meanings; many words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings; and frequently many names for the same thing. Words frequently have different meanings in US and UK english. US english even has many regional variations.

Remember, everybody who posts here is not an expert in either US or UK english.

Yes it isn't very difficult to do. It you have any type of word processor compose it in there and then copy and paste it into the submission program. Most word processors have spelling and grammar check functions. They will not catch everything, but will at least make the story easy to read and follow.

I do that for all the messages I post here on the message Board. It makes it a lot easier for people to read and understand.

If you are using Windows to copy and paste normally all you need to do is Highlight the test and then right click and select Copy. Then when you are ready to paste into the submission area, right click and select Paste.

For the people that prefer using the keyboard like I do. Pressing Ctrl & C will copy the text. Pressing Ctrl & V will paste the text.

I hope this helps.

I support your position, if everybody trys just a little, it will make the stories and posts easier to read and follow.

Of course, you could suggest that everyone tries just a little ....

One idea: When you cut and paste a story from the archives to Word or some other such software, run a fresh spell check, fix a little grammar, tighten the wording, tighten the elastrator, relax.

Hi All,

Surely the whole point with this grammar, spelling, punctuation debate is: does the writer want people to read and enjoy his story?

If so, it behoves the writer to get it right. Remember that this is not a school essay where some poor teacher is so desperate to get the illiterati to actually write something, anything at all, that spelling etc doesn't matter.

But then again we have writers struggling to write in English as a second language, we have English speakers who aren't very literate striving to write a story and, in my opinion, those people deserve every encouragement. Let us show the same tolerance towards the writing as we do for the subject matter.

While I admit that I have sometimes given up part way through a story because it is difficult to read, I would still offer encouragement to anyone who wants to write. My advice is keep trying and do try to say what you mean and spell it right.

Remember one good thing about writing is the more you do the better you get. Think of the language merely as tool for expressing ideas and telling a story. You need to be able to use the language just as you need to be able to use spanners and screwdrivers to work on a car.

So keep trying.

Well said all.

Someone once said that if one can't spell, how is his/her reader to believe the rest of their story?

Since we are trying to be as factual as possible, we should better behave and realize that it both behoves and behooves us to spell well, so we are most credible with our reports.

I do have a question, however, and I wrenched my neck turning from dictionary to dictionary trying to find out:

What the hell is a spanner?

What the hell is a spanner?:pCB,

I think that it is British for a wrench. That is just another of the dilemmas that we face with languages.
