So yeah i tried a distro called puppy linux and wow ITS VERY MODULAR,easy to install software, video drivers for latest videocards aren't an issue and very laptop friendly.

Best of all intended for hardcore or beginner's.You can run on a USB pen and carry your OS with you.

I just installed Dabian on a little PC I just got, been playing with it all day. One thing I discovered, you can use a USB headset with it, it does not work must use the plugs.

The good news I have been streaming music from St Louis all day.

Debian's pretty good.Not user specific to my standards but is the distro with the largest software repository

Puppy linux looked strange to me, when I tested it.

Oh, and the suggestion to install to usb drive with "Burn the disk, boot the disk, choose install to usb drive"... it felt like a cruel joke to me. At least when I was trying to install the thing to usb drive on a computer without any optical media.

For what it is it's not a bad distro.Certainly not the latest xorg + videodrivers but it's a breezy installation.

A minimalist distro in that it uses JWM + ROX desktop environment(which is my fav)

But my opinion is biased, part of the reason I chose it is cuz not many distro's have a firm support for ATI"s fglrx drivers.

They're a real pain and I really wish I bought an nvidia card instead

If I could have Photoshop and all the Adobe stuff in Linux I'd be so sold. I do have Fedora installed so I can work through this massive linux how-to manual, but I really couldn't switch whole-hog, as I'd miss my Windows-only stuff too much (Photoshop, Soundforge, Winamp, etc.).

Have you tried Ubuntu? It comes with apps like GIMP (kinda like Photoshop for masochists), MP3 players, etc., as well as the GNOME Window Manager. I've got it on a couple machines, and it works pretty well!

I like it too both work quite well, I am slowly moving everything over to that box for the day to day texting stuff and leaving the big box for games and movies.

ubuntu is a good begginers distro.but for the die hardcore linux fan it's too bloated

puppy linux is a good choice and just added a new one to my list which achieves what puppy is trying to do however has 64-bit support(option to use more RAm allocation)

it's called "Porteus Linux" and fits a usb key too

But for every user the needs are different so again my opinions are biased.

Take for example River, prefers "debian", and debian has the largest software repository in existance.Period!

I think "Slackware" comes in a good second to debian:)

I love the JWM and openbox window managers.(fluxbox is good too)

ICEWM is too ugly(see what i mean about biases)

Gnome and KDE are resource hogs but if you got the machine and processing power(i7 cores) then go for it hehe

If you really want eye candy go for compiz fusion!!!

Be sure to buy a really good videocard aroud the $400 range

Take my advice for for an nvidia card[better software drivers for linux]
