Anyone interested should Google Tiffany beauty contest. It's an annual beauty contest for transgenders in Thailand. It has gone completely mainstream, broadcast live on prime time public TV (and you can watch it through the internet from any where in the world). Sponsors for the show include all the biggest world brands such as Coca Cola, Heineken, and the likes. This shows the level of social acceptance in Thailand.

I dont like that the judges kept going on about being deceived... She isnt pretending to be anything...

She did not deceive the judges, to the extent that they were deceived, they deceived themselves.

And yes, there are talented people in Thailand.

Isn't accepting the validity of transgendered people a form of talent?

I think the translation and cultural context may have made the judges comments come across as negative, while what they were saying were actually complements on how how her feminine singing can fool even 3 professional singing coaches. They all know that no SRS can change one's voice, and to be able to sing so naturally in a female voice is super difficult and admirable.

The soundtrack was not so clear so I couldn't hear the Thai word that was translated as "deceive" in the English subtitles. But there was a significant omission in the translation. The final judge said "just keep on deceiving, you have just been passed by all three judges." What was omitted in the translation was a final word that is pronounced as "luk", by which he is actually calling her "my daughter" at the end -- a definite endearment.

Incidentally, her second song was the theme song from a major gay coming-of-age movie that received the Thai version of the Oscar best pictures award for the year -- called "Love of Siam." (It is a fantastic movie which I highly recommend searching in the net for the version with English subtitles. One of the actors has since become the hottest young male actors in Thailand.) That song has become so popular many other stars sing it in concerts, and it has even become one of the most popular ring tones for mobile phones.

On a similar prime time TV show as Thailand Got Talent (perhaps same show in a different year ... not sure), one of the judges is herself a very famous transgender TV celebrity (never acting as a freak but always in serious female roles, besides her weekly TV show, unfortunately she could not change her voice like this singer).

There is a local gay dance club that feature transgenders who can sing in both female and male tones. One particularly good singer went from a high Whitney Houston song, singing so we that we had to wonder if she was merely lipsynching, until in the following verse, she dropped down to a baritone. Unfortunately for us, she left the club to become a TV celebrity herself! Believe me, she was fabulous.

On the flip side, I once watched a talent contest for teenagers. A handsome tom boy (pre-op) applied and was accepted under the male talent category and ended up as one of the top 3 finalists.
