I once took my Mother to a movie and she walked out of it because every other word was fuck and there was interracial sex on the screen. It was a grim movie even for my tolerant tastes. So she decided that we would go to "To Wong Fu, So Long and Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar" ... Liked it too.

go figure.

I was once at a live performance of the opera SALOME when the soprano singing Salome tried to dance the dance of seven veils and got booed.

Another time, nearly half of the audience did not like the particular piece of music being played. (Olivier Messian's TURANGALILA Symphony) I heard it on record before that and I was "humming the melodies" as they say but half the audience didn't know what was happening onstage and walked out of the concert hall. That's a tough audience.

It's just stunning when things like this happens.

Somehow, I feel fortunate to have missed knowing about most of these. A few of them were unavoidable, given the media's propensity for hype.

I just watched "Funny Games" and they were right about that one.

WORST movie I have EVER seen, as far as the plot. The suspense was killer, but the characters who got it...damn...

"120 Days of Sodom" was just downright disgusting.

Can't recommend that one either.

Ken Russel made a film called "LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM" that is so manically bad its female star - Amanda Donohoe - reportedly said that during one scene she thought she ended her career. It was that bad.

Popularity isn't everything. The premier performance of Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps actually caused a near riot in the theater (Paris, 1913). Now, it's recognized as a masterpiece (and one of my favorites).

An odd list. It's not bad movies so much as "theater emptying" ones. Triumph of the Will shows up on the "Greatest" lists occasionally. Tidelands, though I would not want to watch it again is a brilliant movie. Stardust memories is far from the worst of Woodie Allen's films. Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom, on the other hand is truly bad in every sense of the word. Having read the book, I hunted the movie up because I thought it unfilmable. The book is little more than an outline and an index to Psychopathia Sexualis (written 100 years before it). I was right; it's one of the worst movies ever made.

The other night my son and I watched 2001 a space odyssey. I saw it in the theater when it came out, and about 10 years later and the other night, my son had never seen it, like me he thought "did I just waist 3 hours watching something that could have been said in 25 words or less", but he agreed that watching the light show at the end of the movie would have been better after a couple joints.

The movie made money so its a success, but I think I need to add it to one of the worst movies I have ever seen list.

Aren't you amazed at the change in the pacing and cutting of movies over the years?

If it were made today, 2001 would be faster and shorter.
