Is there a free/safe program out there than can rid your computer of junk files or do they all require money?

Define junk files, your on a Mac computer its not prone to the same issues that a PC has with Windows.

Spyware and other Malware are easily removed by use of programs such as Adaware, Spybot and other freebies that have been around since XP. To streamline your operations you're going to need a more specialized touch, though; removing bloatware, using a Windows Registry Management program, learning a little bit more about computers then you've advertised so far, etc.

That's assuming you use Windows, though. Like Ken said, Mac is another issue.

I had a Mac program scan my system: it said I had 5,653 junk files. In addition, what used to take 5 seconds to load in the past, takes 45 seconds to over a minute to load now.

There are lots and lots of free programs to remove malware and spyware. You also need to clean/repair your Registry (where parameters are stored for all your programs). Also, remove all the junk files left as a byproduct of computer operation.

Here are some suggestions. All are free. This is for Windows.

Anti-malware - Comodo Internet Security, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, Panda Cloud Anti-Virus (Panda intercepts bad stuff in the network before it reaches your computer).

Anti-Spyware - SUPERAnti-Spyware, Spybot Search & Destroy.

Registry - Free Window Registry Repair.

Cleaner (and Registry) - CCleaner.

P.S. Make sure your computer does regular disk defragmentation. Most new computers do this automatically, but you must do it otherwise.

Sorry. Didn't know you were Mac. Check for Mac versions. Hard to live on an island. Why I've never bought Apple.

I dump the lil trash can in the lower right hand of my screen daily.

Let me see if I can explain this.

To empty the TRASH on a Mac,

Open the Trash by clicking on the trash can icon on the program bar or Dock...

Look at the window and there will be a series of buttons from left to right that -- the arrows that change directories, the four buttons that change the view from icons to lists to columns to that strange panorama type view, keep looking to the right of those four,

Then you should see a spoked wheel or a cog or a gear (looks like all of them) with a down arrow next to it.

Click the down arrow and pick "EMPTY TRASH" option.

It is says it can't delete something, then tell it to continue. and a few thousand (in my case 20,000 files) will be permanently deleted.

Method two:

Put the cursor over the trash can icon and CNTRL-Click the icon, a menu should appear, pick "EMPTY TRASH" and click it.
