A man is lying in hospital after he cut off his testicles for sale at $3, 311. in order to buy fertilizer. Recently divorced father of one, 22-year-old Pilirani Lazarous said he has a one-hectare garden.
Police confirmed Lazarous, seemingly sane, cut off his testicles and immediately offered them for sale before they took him to hospital.
I wanted to sell them to buy fertilizer. I travelled from my home area in Mponela in Dowa District and cut off my genitals in a gmelina plantation near the hospital. The first people I tried to market them reported me to police, said the man from the Kamuzu Central hospital (KCH) surgical ward.
Lazarous narrated he had heard rumours that there is a big market for private parts in the city of Lilongwe, Malawis capital, and decided to make ends meet.
Central Region police spokesman, John Namalenga, confirmed the man had completely severed his testicles. They found him in possession of the vital assets vending them to passersby.
KCH acting director Dr. Lawrence Chiwaula said though Lazarous behaves and sounds normal, the hospital will carry out mental tests on him.
This was an ultimate decision. It is like committing suicide, he said.
Fertilizer is a hard to earn product and government has established a subsidy programme where the product is sold to farmers at lower rates.
