Just saw Avatar on cable.

A couple of thoughts.

Did viewers get the anti-corporate message? Corporations are by nature the ultimate sociopath. Selfish, unconcerned for the welfare of others.

Same message in the Alien series with Ms. Weaver. Is she a populist too?

The other item that caught me was, cheering for the aliens and not the humans.

Metropolis, Star Trek, Babylon 5 as much of Science Fiction is making a statement as Stewart and Colbert do with comedy.

Do viewers get it, y'think?

Avatar is a 20 year old plot. As a movie script it shows its age but as a eye-popping spectacular WOW, it stands out.

Do people get the anti-commercialism and the American Indian parrallels?

Sure do, pardner... But they don't care because the animation is so mind-boggling it makes up for the sterotypes in the part. That and the actors really don't overact. I mean Giovanni Ribisi could have done Snidely Whiplash but he didn't.

It's like watching old John Wayne films. We know he's going to win...

Avatar was fantastic. As to the socio-political implications, I ignore them. Though I prefer big busted women as a rule, I'd take an Avatar woman any day.

Then again, at my advanced age, I'd take any woman.

Yep, as long as there alive and moving MacWolf is ready. I had an old dog like that, I finally had to put him down. But have no fear Mac, we would never have you put down even at your very advanced old age, very advanced, why the other day when talking to GOD, yes that one, he told me of one of his first playmates when he was a little kid, and pointed at our very own MacWolf, and said, "he was old then" and who am I disagree with GOD.

Oh yes, I loved Avatar too.

One of the worst SciFi movies is HOWARD THE DUCK.

It's not even campy fun.

Every so often one of the cable channels shows it and I swear it produces negative ratings.

Given the fact that the message was delivered in the most blatant and heavy-handed manner possible, I suppose that despite not reaching the Glenn Becks, Sarah Palins, and other registered republican types, all viewers with IQs over 65 "got it."

The masses are too swayed by visual special effects or insulated to get

the message.

Another magic SciFi moment.

When Quark, the Ferengi on DS9 is "excommunicated" and people of DS9 start to bring him stuff to make up for his material loss. Quark's brother Rom teaches him, "Quark has friends". Unrelated to, profit or acquisition.

It was one of my most favorite times in the Star Trek realm.

Another was when Dlenn tells Bab5 guy that only Earthers build (multi alien) communities, Mimbari, Centari etc. build colonies of their own species.

Actually it wasn't the corporation it was just the security guys who were aggressive and warlike. Looked to me like they were all ex-army

The scientists and production workers were just regular guys.

And senior management were simply concerned for the welfare of the stockholders, all those little people out there that had invested their life saving in the company. The top people just wanted to do right by them.

And it wasn't as though the locals were interested in the unobtanium.

Really it was a remake of How the West Was Won but with a different outcome.
