KINGMAN - The parents of a 7-month-old infant were jailed this week for leaving their baby in the car while they shopped.
Jason Carl Vogt, 29, and Melissa Venna McElrath, 21, were arrested Thursday on charges of felony child abuse after a shopper spotted the baby crying in its car seat in the backseat of an unattended car in the Walmart parking lot around 1 p.m.
The windows of the sedan were rolled down, but the temperature inside the car exceeded 110 degrees, said Kingman Police Lt. Rusty Cooper.
The baby had an elevated body temperature and was taken to Kingman Regional Medical Center for treatment. He is now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Officers rescued the baby from the car, then waited for the parents to return. It is believed that the infant was in the car for at least 20 minutes, since responding officers waited that long before Vogt and McElrath came out of the store.
They reportedly said they had forgotten that the baby was in the car.
So...... ya think maybe these parents need to exit the gene pool? I sure hope this sort of "forgetfulness" is not genetic.
Thursday, my wife came home from work at Wal-Mart, in a particularly bad mood (she is always in a bad mood but that day was really bad) because she had been called to the front parking lot to deal with the situation in this news story.
She said the windows on the vehicle were rolled down, but the doors were locked and the baby in a baby seat.... door locked, but windows rolled down... hmmmm odd. She described the baby, said that while they were waiting for the police to arrive they gave the baby a small bottled water and the kid (only seven months old) clucthed the water bottle and gulped the water down, did not even let go of the bottle even when they tried to get it back out of his hands.
There were a few things that she told me that really have me wondering...
First, when the cops arrived, they were emphatic that nobody take the baby out of the vehicle until the EMT's arrived. I know, I tend to be a bit reactionary and impulsive, especially when it comes to saving the life of a baby... but WTF?!?! "Don't touch the baby, wait for the EMT's to get here" I will in all likelyhood end up in a prison cell someday, but if I happened upon an abandoned baby in a locked or unlocked car sitting out in Arizona's noonday heat... My first priority would clearly be to save the life of the baby, DUH! "But it is 'criminal tresspassing' if you enter the vehicle according to Arizona Revised Statute, Title 13, paragraph..." Oh give me a FUCKING BREAK! So the cop would have us let the child roast alive in the car while we wait for the "professionals" to get there... Thank GOD that someone BROKE THE LAW, TOOK SOME ACTION, UNLOCKED THE DOORS AND GAVE THE BABY SOME WATER BEFORE THE COPS GOT THERE!
Second, when the parents did finally come out of Wal-Mart, they saw the cop cars and ambulance (the "professionals" finally did arrive) by their vehicle and started screaming "Oh my God!" They claimed they forgot the baby... OK, windows rolled down, but the doors locked, this just does not add up. Two other people that I spoke with told me they think the parents MEANT for their baby to die that day or for their baby to be kidnapped that day. To me, either theory has a lot of holes in it.
