A beautiful very short film based on a story by Ivan Coyote. The opening line is “I had a sex change once, when I was 7 years old.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtpWwl9V-UU

A young girl, Robin, doesn’t like the swimsuit that her mother has bought for her to wear at swim camp, so she decides to simply not wear the top. For six weeks everyone simply assumes she’s a boy. No one notices. No one asks. She loves it.

But, in the end, Mom doesn’t understand.

A good look at the meanings of gender in childhood.

Paolo originally sent the link to me. I forwarded it to several friends, including some on the Archive. Transward wrote back saying (among other things) that the film “captures a moment that a lot of trans people go through, though the beauty of the story is that it is universal. The girl is not even presented as gender questioning. Rather the issue is presented as one of freedom, something that can speak to more than just trans folk.”

I liked the video.

At this age visible gender differences are minimal. So no wonder she was mistaken as a boy.

Great video. She displayed a lot of courage for the six weeks. Don't know how she pulled it off in the locker room and showers.

For that matter, just one swimsuit for 6 weeks? Very cute video :)

I connected to this video, hard.

I don't even know why. In some strange way, I felt like it was about me, and how I was at that age (and a bit older).

This is very strange...

I loved this flick. It reminded me that children are soo unbias. if that is a word?

Adults however can be soo opposite. Thanks for posting the link.

Great short! I am reminded of a day in 1955 when we were going on our first seaside holiday, and we three children, me 8, bro 6, and sis 5, were kitted out with new swimsuits. She had an all-over ruched dress, and I asked why she didn't have shorts like us. Dad replied that it was 'rude' for a girl to show the top half of her body. That puzzled me as her chest looked exactly the same as mine!
