Apparently real discussion between paramedics about situations of penis being cut off

This seems real:

It is a forum so I can't post it all, but basically one guy is asking advice because he had a call where a guy died due to his wife cutting off his penis, and he's wondering what he could have done to stop the bleeding. Two other paramedics respond saying they have responded to similar situations.

Jesus H. Christ, I sincerely hope none of those people are employed as firefighters/paramedics/rescue anywhere near me, cause they sound like they are a bunch of ignorant fucking folks. I only have a basic first aid/CPR certificate, and the knowledge gained from watching "Emergency" and "ER", but I know enough to apply direct pressure, administer IV fluid extenders (Normal saline, 5% dextrose and ringers lactate), if possible, locate and pack on ice the severed body part, then transport it, and the victim, as soon as possible. It's a traumatic amputation, stanch the bleeding, treat for shock, and haul ass for the hospital, but some of these guys make it sound like they want to stop at Walmart on the way to buy shoestrings to fashion a tourniquet on the way.

I was gonna look at some of the other posts on the site, but then I figured maybe I shouldn't, that way I can cling to my apparently naive belief that those guys in their big red truck with the funny horn actually know what the fuck they are doing.

When you deal with death and dying every day, you tend to lose sympathy and become less and less sensitive to things like this. That's why people in the medical field often (not always) seem not to be very empathetic. You have to laugh or you go crazy. As for these professionals, they didn't seem to know how to handle this situation, yes direct pressure is number one, but a simple set of forceps seems logical to use.

it's called Shop Talk, and everyone does it, even emergency workers. The purpose of that thread was to find a way to help the next guy who runs into something like this.

Guys sever their own penises all the time, accidentally. Construction jobs mostly, but it happens, and the EMT guys want to be prepared. If the conversation seems callous, it's because you have not been exposed to their job.

BTW, my Dad is an EMT.

I tried to register to the site to give them an anatomy lesson and express the same concerns. The military has done much research on this. Direct pressure saves lives.

Just incase any of you come across this... direct pressure between the legs up against the pelvic bone. One fist should do. (Assumming the cut has not left a stump to tie off)
