Satellite Internet

I have a question about visiting the EA on a worksite.

Often I work in a camp with satellite internet, usually a very simple system with a receiver (Dlink) and a wireless router less than two feet away.

If I use my personal laptop, is it possible for those visits to show up on some type of archive or record?

As long as the router is connected directly to a modem you should be o.k. It may leave a record with the internet service provider. I would still suggest using a proxy server once connected to the internet.

If you connect through a network server first, it might leave a record.

True, the last thing you want is for personal to fetch you for using the internet and not on company business. I always had a rule when I was at work, and home, leave work at work and leave home at home.

At my office, we have a hard wired network that all of the company computers are connected to. We also have a WiFi Network thats on a totally different connection to the internet. That is for our Membership to use. The staff that brings in their own Laptops use the wireless one. It makes sense. keep the riffraff off of the domain.

Good rule. But I often work 6 weeks straight in a camp. That is a long time to go.

I install satellite internet (Wildblue). With satellite internet you should have a modem that connects to the ODU (dish) and that is not a piece of equipment that a user can access or get any information from and is owned by the provider. It all depends on how simple the router is. Some will log web sites that you visit (simple dlink probably not) your best option would be to look up the model and see what the specs. are. Basically like any other ISP in that they can look up the traffic if they so desire but wont unless they are requested to.

As far as your company goes they should have some sort of written policy otherwise it would be very hard to terminate someone for improper internet usage due to the possibly being sued. The best thing to do is to ask if there are restrictions on web surfing on your own time. Then again that might make someone wonder all the more what you are doing.

Most companies do have such a policy and its usually something you sign when your hired but if your not sure ask personal.

The last thing you want to happen is to be called into personal and handed your final check and walked out the door because you did not take the 5 minutes to ask.

I have seen it happen at just about every place I ever worked so just be smart about it.
