So I didn't see a conversation on this so I thought I would start one. I was curious the pre op/ Post op information and information on the actual medical procedures done. I was wondering what members had to say with first hand and second hand information.

All information given me was concise and to the point. I knew what procedure would be useed (inguinal canal removal). The only thing I didn't know to bring was a jock strap. But, the surgery center had plenty.

Depending on if you are doing a local anesthetic or a general , you will have to follow protocol. If a general , no food or water after midnight the day before the procedure. The surgery itself is easy, they just slit you open , and snip them out. The cords are tied, and you get stitched up.
I was awake for mine, and the only real sensation I had was a pulling feeling as she stretched the cords to maximize the amount removed. In all it took less than a half hour for each side.
After care is really simple too. Ice pack on your crotch til you get home, and then use bags of frozen peas for the next 4-6 hours. After 6 hours , cold will not help with potential swelling. For me, pain was niminal, so I avoided the pain meds, so as not to get constipated.
Each person is different, so if you need them take them, and if you do , have a good laxative handy , so you won't need to strain to keep from putting pressure on the stitches.
A few days without getting the wounds wet is advised, but after that shower normally , and if your doc is like most , stitches will be the dissolving type. They will come out in a week or so on their own. You will have some swelling, and will feel like you still have balls for a few weeks, but all too soon, the sack will be empty , and loose.
Take it easy for 2-3 weeks, (no really heavy lifting) and you'll be fine.

I had an inguinal surgery. Drains were in for two days during which I could barely leave the bed; it took about 5 days before I could say that it wasn't debilitating anymore.
I had the dissolvable sutures too but they just wouldn't go away. After three weeks I went to the urologist (Mr. Magoo) who removed some of them and yanked some hairs in the process; I had to yank out the rest myself. Scarring has been kind of bad, especially where the sutures had gone in. I'm 7 weeks in now and things feel much better than they look.
By now the scar is evening out texture-wise and my wads of dried blood in the scrotum are shrinking slowly. There was actually very little bruising under the skin; what I did have wanted to go inside. There was also no swelling outside of the sack. It looks like I have a tiny left nut.
My anesthesia was general; it required a two night hospital stay; and I was able to shower five days later, and not a day too soon.

I was quite nrevious so they gave me something to relax it worked. It took about 40 minutes. Two small scars that were gone quickly and nothing nasty.

My bi-lateral orchiectomy was pretty straight forward and without any major issues. I had a surgical biopsy of my testes a few months before so this was much the same. The surgery was scheduled for 9:30 AM so I was instructed to have no solid foods after midnight. My wife also administered a strong enema to me the evening before so I wouldn't have a need to strain at the toilet for several days after the surgery. And she had a nice long look and fondling of my balls as I was kneeling on the bathroom floor being filled with her soapy water. We reported to the hospital the absurd 2 hours they wanted before the surgery so they could check my weight, blood sugar, PO2 level and get me into a hospital gown. They hooked up a IV in my hand and then had me wait around the next hour or more. Right before they wheeled me off to the operating room, they added an antibiotic to the IV and had me take off my sweat pants and underwear. When I got into the OR, they transfered me onto the operating table. I had to sit on the side and lean forward so the anestheologist could give me the spinal block anesthetic I chose that so I could remain awake during the surgery. Then I had to lay back on the narrow operating table. My legs were fastened into the stirrups that were wheeled up and straps were fastened around my outstreached arms and across my chest. They hooked up more wires and grounding pad for the cautery. They also put a number of rolled up and warmed blankets around me and covered my chest with others. It was nice to be warm and cuddely! My pubic/anal hair is always shaved so they didn't have much to prepare there save for washing things off with some antiseptic. My penis was taped up on my pubis so it was out of the way. My doctor sat on a stool and moved in between my legs to start the operation. And then they added another blue drape so I couldn't see the main event. The surgery took about 45 minutes and the only real sensations I got from it were a tugging and pulling sensation as my doctor pulled on the attaching cords so he could cut them off as short as possible. The other was an occasional burning smell from the cautery as whoever was running it didn't capture everthing. After a half hour or so, the anestheologist asked how I was doing and I told him my back was uncomfortable from lying flat. He gave me some Fentanyl in the IV line and almost instantly the discomfort was gone. It was only later that I found Fentanyl is about 80 times stronger than morphine. Soon the doctor asked if I wanted to see my testicles. Each in a small clear plastic cup to be sent off to the pathology lab. They were small from being atrophied and were a very dark red color- not the blueish-pink color of ordinary testicles. The doctor then asked a nurse for a 1/4 inch Penrose. I didn't know he was going to use a drain but he added another hole in the bottom of my empty scrotum and held it in with a single stitch. They covered things with a big wad of gauze and a jock strap and then sent me off to the recovery room. I said thanks to everyone in the OR (7 or 8 people) and was probably one of a very few guys who was happy at being castrated.
In the recovery room, I was really thirsty and had none of the nausea I have had before from general anesthesia. But they wouldn't give me anything to drink, just useless ice chips. In time they sent me back to the pre-op room to my wife and clothes. She obviously got me something to drink. It took at least an hour for the anesthesia to wear off so I could move my legs, etc and manage to walk badly. Then the nurse wanted me to eat something. I told her I was thirsy in the recovery room and they wouldn't give me anything to drink and now I'm not hungry and she wants me to eat something? They used the jock and gauze after the biopsy and we found an ABD pad held in place by a woman's control brief was much better so my we put that on when I got dressed. The pad absorbed the sepages better and didn't stick like gauze did and it didn't insulate as much so the ice was more effective. I was ready to go but the nurse still wanted me to eat something. I didn't have the balls anymore to really protest so I had a bit of soup to humor her. We got home about 12:30.
My doctor had made two horizontal incisions near the top of my scrotum and sutured each with a single continuous stitch of a dissolvable thread. Unlike other incisions I had seen pics of, these incisions were in a single valley between 2 ridges of the wrinkled skin. He said this made it much easier to sew things back up as the skin edges were straight and didn't have to go across ridges and valleys like a verticle incision would. He said the scars would be almost unnoticable that way. And with the incisions at the top of the scrotum, he could remove much more of the cords without having to resort to an inguinal approach. It all made sense to me and has turned out very well.
Post surgery, I kept ice on it for the first day and took maybe 8 Tylenol 3 for pain over 2 days. I drove my wife to work the next morning like I usually do and even went to work myself. I wasn't really useful there but was up and about. I did go to a hockey game that evening- no beer and I took my time to climb to the top of the bleachers. It was kind of kinky to see things drip out but it worked great. There was no drain for the biopsy procedure and there was swelling and bruising on my scrotum. Now with the drain, there was absolutely no swelling or bruising. The drain was removed on the third day and I was allowed quick showers. I left the stitches alone for about 12 days but then they were itching and didn't seem to be ready to dissolve anytime soon so I started to help things along.

That is quite a bit of money, especially for those without insurance, and without well paying jobs. ( Curently making next to nothing) I would be up to my eyeballs in debt if I didn't have the charity care at the University Of Washington.
