Upgrading to win7

Post by kristoff »

I am likely to upgrade to a new computer in the next few days. Where can I check software compatibility - is there a data base somewhere? For instance, I still use Office 2000, Quickbooks 2002, etc. Presumably, there is a place I can check some of my antique equipment as well?

I checked Microsofts website for compatibility for all my software. Even though, I use office 2003, everything worked. Even my game

"Star Trek-Starfleet Command" worked beautifly.

You should be able to use microsoft upgrade advisor. Just don't pay any attention to what it says about your p.c. hardware. It should still check all your software, printers, scanners, etc.

You might want to download a Linux Distro and put that on your "old" computer the speed may make you think you have a new one! Private message me if you want specifics.

Office 2000 has been put out to pasture by Uncle Gates...the official term is "End-Of-Life" and will no longer be updated...this makes it a security risk. You could try open office (its free). I use a free program called http://secunia.com/ (Secunia) it sits in the background and watches for updates then lets you know. As to "software compatibility" you would have to look up each program though I do believe that with Windows 7 you can trick a program into thinking its on an older version of Windows.

Trying to figure out how to go about making a restore disk for Win7. Can't seem to find any place. Found one that says Repair disk... is that the same? Win7 experts, what say?

I have been running Win7 for almost a year now and I really like it. I rigged my version so I could upgrade instead of a clean install, so I still have all my programs including Office XP. Win7 is everything Vista was supposed to be, very stable, very few driver conflicts, and easy to use.

It's the best Windows ever. I highly recommend it.
