Are you an alcoholic? When do you know you have become addicted?

Drinking alcohol excessively for a long period of time has a lot of risks to your health. The amount of alcohol you drink at a sitting and the extent of overall times you do this will determine the amount of damage done to your body.
If you are not a heavy drinker and only drink 1-2 drinks a sitting a couple of times a week, you would not be considered an alcoholic If your drinking becomes more and more each time and more often, and you continue this habit over a long period of time, you will eventually become addicted to alcohol. You increase your body tolerance each time you have a drink.
1. Your family life begins to crumble.
2. You become depressed.
3. Your anxiety will increasingly become worse.
4. You will be unable to sleep as well as you did before.
5. You start to lose your self esteem.
6. Your friends avoid you.
7. You have problems at work.
That's just the beginning. You start to shut out the family and your friends. You shut out everything except the alcohol. The long term effects of alcohol become more serious as time goes by.
You could lose your job. You could lose your family. You have already lost your self respect and your self esteem.

I was going to put in something snippy about how you know vis-a-vis the fact I was in a relationship with one for a while, but I decided it wasn't worth the negative reputation points.
Long may he rot for what he did to me, is as far as I'm going to go.

I am a recovering alcohlic besides being a recovering Catholic. Most alcohlics are not able to stop after a couple of drinks. There is something in their liver that sends a different message to the brain than normal people. It makes you want more and one becomes a person that closes bars whenever and does not go home.I never had a problem unless I got started. My father told me that was his problem too.I think it runs in families as IO come from a long line of drinkers.Nothing about alcohal is written in concrete and it treats each person different. Well said. Any drug and that includes nicotine and heroin can be used in moderation or can be abused. If one is not happy using a drug, then for crying out loud don't use it.
One of my pet peeves from having been involved at one point in drug abuse work: "alcohol and drugs." Whooptedoo, alcohol IS a drug. How about THEM apples? And, while I am sure no one is particularly interested to know, nicotine is actually more addictive than heroin.
All I am trying to say is that there is no such thing as a "good" drug or a "bad" drug.
Onwards and upwards,
Regards, Glenda

I'm recently trying to get my drug addiction more under control (if that's possible) but it was interesting that the first thing my drug councilor did was suggest me cutting out alcohol. I never realized how much it reacts and combines when mixing it with drugs.
And yes I can attest personally all those things in the list will eventually happen. It's quite horrible at times.

Actually an alcoholic is a patterned drinker. It has nothing to do with the amount of alcohol you drink. If you only have one drink a night, but you need that drink each night, in other wors, you cannot go through the night without that one drink, then you are an alcoholic.
Remember it isn't necessarily how much you drink, but your dependance on what you do drink, that makes you an alcoholic.

There are many alcoholics that don't have any of those problems. They are called "functioning alcoholics". They work, they sleep, they take care of their responsibilities and relationships. Yet? They are still alcoholics. They are not depressed, don't have problems at work and have no trouble making or keeping friends. In fact they have shaped theirs lives so nothing will interfere with their drinking. No one will have any excuse to gripe to them, that their drinking is causing a problem.
There is no hard and fast definition of what an alcoholic is. However I can offer this: People who are not alcoholics never wonder if they are. Only those with drinking problems wonder if they have a drinking problem. Because they already know the answer.
If you know someone with an alcohol problem, there is help out there. People overcome drinking all the time. But almost no one quits without help and support.
