Help! desktop will not boot

Post by curious_guy (imported) »

I have not upgraded my desktop motherboard in several years. It is an Epox 8RGA with an AMD Barton 2500+ and two 512 sticks of DDR ram. I use the onboard video and sound. I run Windows XP Home SP3.

About two weeks ago, my computer started locking up and rebooting itself frequently. It would do it mostly when my computer room was above 79 degrees F. The problems would also occur more frequently when the CPU was heavily used for several minutes. The problem seemed to get worse with time.

When the computer locked up, sometimes the screen would be blank. Sometimes it would have diagonal streaks filling the whole screen and sometimes it would be frozen with the mouse cursor not moving.

In an effort to solve the problem, I cleaned off all the dust from all the chips and heat sinks on the motherboard and on the SIIG IDE controller card I use. I also replaced one case fan that had stopped turning. This seemed to solve the problem for a while.

When I had the problem again, I changed the FSB speed from 166 to 133. I thought this would cause the system to generate less heat. I would rather have a slow system than one that locked up frequently.

When the change in FSB speed did not help, I went into the BIOS and loaded the "Fail Safe" defaults. The "Fail Safe" defaults set the FSB to 100.

When I tried to boot up my computer seemed to go most of the way through the boot sequence and then I got this message:

HTLDR is missing.

press Alt-Ctl-Del to restart

I have restarted several time. I get the same message each time.

Is this message from Windows or from the BIOS? Does anyone know what HTLDR is? Is there anything I can do now except replacing my mother board?🙋

it is the file reqwuired to load windows, it is probably a corrupt disk.

You could try to repair it with the original windows CD

Should be "NTLDR is missing".

This is from windows bootloader. It states, that the main bootloader file can not be found.

1) Have you done anything with HDD cables?

2) May be there was some setting in BIOS, related to additional IDE controller (and the settings were reset to defaults). This usualy results in wrong boot source.

Second variant is most probable.

Also - is where any diskette left in floppy disk drive? ;)

I get this because I screwed up a dual boot system (from two separate hard drives). I put XP on D because 2000 on C was messed up and wouldn't boot. Infinite reboots...

I used XP for a bit, then put 2000 back on C. This messed up the boot.ini file that fires up the PC. Now 2000 boots off of C, but XP won't boot off of D.

I was getting "NTDLR is missing", then I realized I had a Compact Flash card in the reader and my BIOS say "try to boot from other devices." I had made a backup of boot.ini to this card...pull the CF card out, starts fine in 2000. I still have yet to repair or reload XP to D. Not that I need it yet.

Check to see if you have any other media installed that may be causing this error.

From the sound of it, though, I'd say the ol' girl has finally bit the big one.

i was going to suggest check for media in a drive , i also had this problem when i had stupidly left a floppy in the drive !

Check in your BIOS on the boot order too, may help.

Of course there is no substitute for 'being there ' :-)

My monitor overscans a little on the left side so I could only see a little of the "N". I guessed it was an "H".

It turns out that I needed to set my first boot device to drive one and not drive zero. Drive zero is a data drive. I do not remember setting it up this way.🙏

I like to keep my boot record set for CD/ROM first, then hard drives, in order, then "other".

glad You managed to get it sorted :-)

Sometimes BIOS can do some strange things. May be worth checking the manufacturers website for any BIOS updates....

Your first description almost sounds like something is overheating! Does the case have sufficient methods to cool it down? Not sure about weather in Germany. Try running the computer with the side panel off along with maybe a fan blowing air into the case. A computer that is overheating will cause equipment to slowly break down and/or age faster.

As others have mentioned your BIOS should always be the first thing you check when the computer is not booting right. Also, ALWAYS make one change at a time when you need to make changes.

I am not in Germany. I am in Southern California. It has been quite hot recently.

I have a super tower case with three fans in front pushing air in. I have two fans in the back pushing air out. My power supply has two fans that push air out. One of the fans in the back was not running but I replaced it. I have been running my computer with the side off for years. There is a place at the top back of the case for a 92 mm fan. I do not have a fan there.
