About two weeks ago, my computer started locking up and rebooting itself frequently. It would do it mostly when my computer room was above 79 degrees F. The problems would also occur more frequently when the CPU was heavily used for several minutes. The problem seemed to get worse with time.
When the computer locked up, sometimes the screen would be blank. Sometimes it would have diagonal streaks filling the whole screen and sometimes it would be frozen with the mouse cursor not moving.
In an effort to solve the problem, I cleaned off all the dust from all the chips and heat sinks on the motherboard and on the SIIG IDE controller card I use. I also replaced one case fan that had stopped turning. This seemed to solve the problem for a while.
When I had the problem again, I changed the FSB speed from 166 to 133. I thought this would cause the system to generate less heat. I would rather have a slow system than one that locked up frequently.
When the change in FSB speed did not help, I went into the BIOS and loaded the "Fail Safe" defaults. The "Fail Safe" defaults set the FSB to 100.
When I tried to boot up my computer seemed to go most of the way through the boot sequence and then I got this message:
HTLDR is missing.
press Alt-Ctl-Del to restart
I have restarted several time. I get the same message each time.
Is this message from Windows or from the BIOS? Does anyone know what HTLDR is? Is there anything I can do now except replacing my mother board?
