Windows update warning

If you get a Microsoft update suggestion to Global Explorer it could lock you out of the latter!

Having finally upgraded to XP from 2000, with everything going fine, I got a flag saying an update was available. I thought this was just a standard patch to try to keep the gas in Windows leaky airship, but was invited to upgrade to Global Explorer 8. I thought I l aready had that as a result of my upgrade to XP, but figured it would be harmless to click on yes.

NOT HARMLESS AT ALL! The program broke off in mid-stream and I was without Global Explorerer. The Verizon (my SP) tried might and main to re-install and couldn't, so as a final resort he installed Firefox as my browser.

BUT THE MAIN POINT IS THAT HE SAID MINE WAS THE FOURTH SUCH CALL HE HAD RECEIVED ON THIS IDENTICAL ISSUE. SO BE VERY WARY OF A WINDOWS REQUEST TO UPGRADE TO EXPLORER 8. YOU MAY FiND YOURSELF SHIVERING IN THE RAIN

BY the way, highest praise to Verizon's technie who did everything possible to re-install Explorer and then installed Firefox for me and made sure all my favorites were saved.

There are dozens and dozens of updates to XP, including service pack 2 and security updates and on and on.

Windows won't try to update everything all at once, it might take days.

But expect windows to be updating itself on numerous times in the future.

It might just get done by the time XP is obsolete.

Many 2000 programs will not work under XP.

In fact IE 8 will also cause some application programs to no longer work.

It is a can of worms.

Good luck.

No matter what OS you use computer security should be a major concern. Also, one can always go to Google and do a search for any supposed update just to see if it is legit. Even check out stuff sent by people you know.

I have been using the new Windows7 with the 64 bit OS. I don't use IE, have not used it in years I think it was IE3 or maybe 4 but anyway, I use Mozilla firefox and Google Chrome I have had no problems.
