Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's 14 movies to see before you die Jul 6, 2009, 01:45 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Recently, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay posted a list of 14 movies they think everyone should see before they die on Funny or Die (http://www.funnyordie.com/embed_videos/ ... re-you-die). And they are:

1. Goodfellas

2. Election

3. The Man Who Would Be King

4. Tin Men

5. Cinema Paradiso

6. Nights of Cabiria

7. Airplane!

8. Series 7: The Contenders

9. The Exorcist

10. Mail Order Wife

11. Rear Window

12. The Sound of Music

13. Tron

14. Flirting With Disaster

McKay noted that he made a point of excluding any film that he felt would be on everyone's list, i.e. Jaws, Star Wars, Apocalypse Now, and Goodfellas (though he thenfelt compelled to make that No. 1 because he watches it before every film he shoots). Ferrell had a very specific purpose in mind for including Tron: "Just watch this to remind yourself that this movie was actually made and that for a brief moment in time there was a Tron ride at Disneyland." Which films make your very personal list? See mine after the jump. Below, the trailer for my Tron...Gymkata.

1. Rocky

2. Singin' in the Rain

3. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

4. When Harry Met Sally...

5. Waiting for Guffman

6. Die Hard

7. Bull Durham

8. Apollo 13

9. It's a Wonderful Life

10. Red River

11. The King of Kong

12. L.A. Story

13. Gymkata

14. Up

Interesting list. I gave it some thought before I read the last group of 14 and to my surprise my Number 2 was the same.

1. Driving Miss Daisy

2. Singin' in the Rain

3. On golden pond

4. 12 angry men (the original)

5. grapes of wrath

6. M A S H

7. CATS

8. My Fair Lady

9. Its a mad mad mad mad world

10. Airplane

11. Harvey

12. North by Northwest

13. Cool Hand Luke

14. The Sting

15. Sound of Music

I added one more because the top 15 sounds better then the top 14.

Who is on your list.

River

River

On the first list, I've seen Tin Man, Man Who Would Be King, Exorcist, Rear Window, Tron and the Sound of Music.

I've seen all of second list but only loved Red River, King Kong and all the Die Hard movies.

On third list, my favorites are On Golden Pond, Twelve Angry Men (old one), Grapes of Wrath, MASH, Cool Hand Luke and My Fair Lady.

I'd add: Independence Day, Color Purple, Starship Troopers.

Of those 46, I haven't seen these four:

Nights of Cabiria

Series 7: The Contenders

Waiting for Guffman

Up

I'm surprised that none of Peter Seller's satires are on the list.

The Mouse that Roared (the only time management threatened to throw me out of the theater for laughing too hard and too loud... go figure)

Dr Strangelove

Pink Panther

Or the brilliant satire BRAZIL.

What! No Mars Attacks! It is worth it for the donut shop, butt crack and country and western music causing the Martian heads to explode.

An old one:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051383/

And there's probably an Archive story in there somewhere...

This is a quote from there:

Profanity

EditHistory Some language was used through the movie including a child using fowl language.

So was the script a turkey?

This is a tough one. I haven't owned a TV in 40 years, but I love movies, and go at least 4 times a week, plus DVDs and downloads. I live near NYC, so I get to see all the best. It staggers me to think of picking only 14 out of all those films. Instead, I'll just list a bunch, and maybe add more later. The films vary from very good to masterpiece.

Casablanca - Bogart classic

Strangers on a Train - Hitchcock classic

Barry Lyndon - Kubrick masterpiece

The Bicycle Thief - Vittorio De Sica masterpiece

It Happened One Night - Frank Capra classic

Shanghai Triad - brilliant film by Zhang Yimou (Chinese with titles)

Story of Qiu Jou - another great Yimou film (Chinese with titles)

The Third Man - Carol Reed's post-WW2 masterpiece

Grand Illusion - Jean Renoir masterpiece (French with titles)

Rules of the Game - even greater Renoir masterpiece (French with titles)

Nosferatu - silent film, and the best vampire movie ever

Tokyo Story - a great, great film by Ozu (Japanese with titles)

Late Spring - another Ozu masterpiece (Japanese with titles)

Harlan County, USA - great documentary about coal miners

Baby Face - the quintessential early 30s film - Barbara Stanwyck

Holiday - Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, directed by Cukor

Gojira - the original Godzilla, minus Perry Mason - a happy surprise (Japanese with titles)

Federico Fellini was a genius of cinema, who made several essential films (all in Italian with titles): Nights of Cabiria (his best, one of the greatest films ever made), La Strada, Amarcord, Fellini's Roma, Fellini Satyricon, et al.

Akira Kurosawa was another of the greatest directors, probably my favorite. His best films (all in Japanese with titles) would go with me to a desert island: Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, I Live in Fear, Rashomon, One Wonderful Sunday, Stray Dog, Ikiru, Hidden Fortress, Kagemusha, Rhapsody in August, et al.

The Battle of Algiers - best political thriller of all time, based on the true story of the war between French colonialists and Algerians - even more relevant today (French and Arabic with titles)

I guess that's at least 14. You won't be disappointed by any of these.

Reading the other lists, I give a big "thumbs up" to -

Rear Window, Twelve Angry Men, Apollo 13, North By Northwest.

I loved most of the others, too, but these made a deep permanent impression.

Dave, I share your appreciation of Peter Sellers (The Mouse That Roared and Dr. Strangelove) and Brazil. Brazil was probably too dark to become popular, but it's a great film. May your ducts always be in working order.
