Iraq Injuries
In a previous thread, people discussed Vietnam war injuries that resulted in "War Caused Genital Injury".
I was looking for articles, statistics, photos, etc. about the current injuries happening from road-side bombs in Iraq.
From these improvised road-side bomb blasts, I would expect many injuries to the genital area.
Does anyone have more information about this or know a website addressing these issues?

Re: Iraq Injuries
With the advances in body armour that protects most vital areas, there have been a steady increase in trauma to other "vital" areas, such as the genitals in which the man "survives" the injury. There have been a large number of penectomies, castrations or both in Iraq. I have heard of several men being castrated by IEDs but I doubt if any actual stats are kept on this type of amputation especially if combined with other trauma. I have read that in Vietnam many of the casualties also lost their genitals and that an average of 500 men per year suffered the loss of their penis and or testicles and "survived". Many thanks to the infamous Bouncing Betty aka Castration Mine that was designed to explode at crotch level.

Re: Iraq Injuries
I was wondering about the very same thing as the original poster recently. I did a fairly decent search for hard numbers. I have not uncovered any.
I do know that the army admits that there are an uncomfortable percentage of those wounded who receive injury to their genitals. While techniques for repair of these organs have improved, there are still too many soldiers and marines being sent home without their penis/and or testicles. It seems to me that it should be possible to construct some sort of body armor "cup" to keep our troops from being emasculated by the enemy.

Speed,
What you just said kind of clicked in my head.
Think about it, we've advanced in so many ways over the centuries but in a sense we haven't changed at all.
Opposing armies are still trying to emasculate their enemies.

I know that in Nam some had groin protectors but they were so cumbersome not many wore them. Also gunners in choppers sat on their flack jackets to avoid ground fire from penetrating the bottom of the chopper and bullets going into their balls and dick.

Re: Iraq Injuries
In addition, the only two soldiers I have heard of captured in Iraq had their penises cut off and were castrated by their captors as revenge for a rape commited by other soldiers before being killed. And here we are reading miranda warnings to enemy combatants.

This (http://www.counterpunch.org/rosen06232007.html) is a heavily cited article from 2007 on amputations & genital injuries from the Iraq war. One section about the middle of the article is from an interview with a military urologist who reportedly amputated the genitalia of 1-2 men per day during a four-month deployment.

Re: Iraq Injuries
Wow, one or two genital amputations a day and this is just one doctor. I did read I believe on a forum here several years ago of a few doctors in Vietnam in treating men that had lost their penis or if it had to be amputated. They would also castrate them as a form of "mercy" to prevent them having a life needing sex but not having the penis to have sex. I cannot imagine being 20 years old and having balls to make me horny and no dick to relieve my sexual needs.

Years ago I e-mailed with a Viet Nam vet who reportedly had a penectomy due to war injury. He shared that they really tried to save as much as possible but, he was left with a very short stump that ended under the scrotum and a urethra somewhere thereabouts.
Of course who knows what is, for real, over the web.
But that was his story and I offer it for your consideration. Obviously the balls were not an automatic removal as suggested.
Maybe he is here among us and will ID himself.
I have found other long ago persons here.

Re: Iraq Injuries
No they were not always removed, but at the whim of some surgeons if they felt the man would suffer more with testicles than without them. I personally would not want to endure not only the embarassment but the agony of having balls with no dick.
