I read a while back that during the Vietnam War, an average of 700 GIs lost all or part of their genitals and lived to tell about it. Since there were over 300,000 wounded during the war, 700 a year loosing their penis, testicles or both seems possible especially since the VC and NVA seemed to specialize in manhood destroying devices like the "bouncing betty" land mine aka the Castration Mine. I wonder how many would have reconsidered going to Nam if they knew they would come home with the ultimate "war wound", and if any stats are being kept on similar wounds in the current Iraq war.

Well, its an interesting topic. My guess is that the frequency of injury might have something to do with the number of mines used in the war theatre. To me, mines are designed to burst upwards and, almost by definition, are going to wreak havoc on the lower parts of the body especially the sensitive and fragile tissues of the genitals.
Maybe they were not all injuries caused by weapons. There were stories of castrations carried out by the Viet Cong on captured troops and also reports of similar activities, possibly retaliations, carried out by the Allied troops on captured Viet Cong. Probably both are true but I am not sure how extensive the practice was. Would a castration be classified as a war wound in these circumstances?? And if so how many of these reported injuries were from this source?
As with most wars there is always a certain amount of atrocity involved that is glossed over and not mentioned. I guess, if the truth be known, there is a degree of savagery dormant in most of us that can be activated by the pressures of these conflicts.

Loss of procreation is a 100% disability.
Pays the same as Max Cleland, triple amputee.
I e-mailed for a while with a man who lost his
penis in Viet Nam. Described a mid scrotal urethra as
best as I remember. Balls remained. Helps to have your
own blood supply. He shared there was a special lady
who gave him comfort but, never detailed, how.
Then there is the scene in Apocalypse Now where "Chef" (?)
asks the regular airborne guys why the sit on their helmets.
You'd think those choppers should have a titanium floor or that
composite armor used on modern tanks.

The armoring on helicopters is limited to some plating to protect the pilots.
Any more would and the chopper would become too heavy to be effective.
If a bullet passes through the aluminum deck of a helicopter, the steel helmet would be enough to stop small arms fire only.

I have a Vietnamese friend near Bao Loc. He lost both his legs and everything between. It happened near his hometown. He doesn't have a stump, he is a stump.
If he had known this before, would he have asked to be born there.
Sorry if you don't like this, but I had the feeling that again something was missing at the question

Back in the 80s, when I was a teenager, my parents bought a house from a man who was a vietnam vet who lost half his penis in the war. He had finally, after 15 years, found a woman who wanted him. That's why he was selling the house. He was moving away to start a new life. Life must have been hell for him there because it was a small town and everyone new. I wonder if women can appreciate the sufferings men go through sometimes. I don't think they do, to be honest.

There is a GREAT play, called PRIVATE WARS by James McClure about a VA hospital after the Vietnam war.
On of the lead characters spends the entire play talking about fucking, and exposing himself to the nurses. At the end of the play it is revealed that he has no genitals and it makes him stark raving mad...

I don't think most people can truly appreciate the sufferings of others.
It's not about gender.

Do a Google search for "War Caused Genital Injury" and you will find literally thousands of entries. It seems that about 5% of wounds involve the external genitalia. It is a very serious concern to military surgeons, of course.
