'Puter problem.

Post by FianceeUvBigGuy (imported) »

Yoli here (about the least competent 'puterist in the world.)

I recently upgraded to the latest version of Firefox but now things take forever to load...sometimes so long that I give up or switch over to Netscape where things are rapid.

I can live with Netscape quite happily but since I upgraded F'Fox about half the time I cannot get certain WMVs, AVIs, Mpegs, etc, to play. I get a message that mumbles something or other about connections, servers, and the like. The Mpegs seem least afflicted, though. Both N'scape and F'Fox are affected.

What's even more maddening is that sometimes the "bad" ones DO play!

And...those that were bookmarked and played well enough before are screwed up now.

Lastly...I'm often getting a message that I need the latest version of Adobe Flash Player in order to view certain vids. Like the Windows Player, it does not happen all the time.

I must have installed Flash a dozen times but I still often get a message that my player is "degraded" or "You need to upgrade".

What's going on? Can it be some choices I made re access and/or security?

These phenomena occur with some sources/servers but not others.

Thanks!

Yoli

Yoli,

Please list any and all add-ons you have for FF.

The more you have, the longer it takes to load.

Do you have AdBlock+ installed? That will block Flash and media and some images, and so will NoScript. FF is more aggressive at security than IE or any other browser, and it will refuse to load certain things.

I have a LOT of add-ons for mine, having used it since FF1 came out. I have a dual core machine with about 8 ghz of power, and it still takes FF about 15 seconds to load up, and takes 150MB of RAM to run. Yes, FF can be a hog.

Also, carefully study the TOOLS-OPTIONS in every detail and see what's turned on and off in there.

Yoli,

How old is your computer?

Do you know anything about the clock speed of the processor?

What I am thinking is that you may have an old computer that runs so slow it has trouble dealing with firefox. You could also have malware and/or viruses that will slow things down.

There are a lot of things that it could be.

My computer just fell victim to a malware attack and I had to run the restore off of a partition on the hard drive that they used instead of supplying a restore disk with it. Mine is an HP pavilion 533w and it does a pretty good job for a 5 year old computer.

Unless yours is pretty old you should not have a problem with it running too slow.

On a COMPLETELY un-related, related note, I recently suffered a virus attack on my computer. It ended up costing me nearly $200 to fix, and wiped out many pic's that I have foolishly never backed up.

It seems the virus got in on some "lime-wire" downloads that my son used to load up his "mp3" thing.

Just before my computer became completely un-usable, I was getting numerous "warnings" that this or that needed to be upgraded, other "warnings" telling me that a virus had been detected and urging me to download the latest (and most expensive) "AVG" shield.

I admit that I am an I.T. moron and a computard when it comes to all but the simplest computer working issues. To me, a "server" is someone who brings food to a diner's table, I still have no idea what an "mpeg" or a "jpeg" is and people often send me e-mails that I never ever read or understand because they "need to be unzipped to view it..." Jeez! I save my "unzipping" activities for my sexual escapades thankyou!

With regards to your trouble with these "Firefox" et al things... do you think you may have one of those "virus" things? Anyone else using the computer who may have gone to that "lime-wire" website or others where they could have downloaded something could have got your computer infected. And the virus would be there causing every increasing "warnings" urging you to buy some product that promises to make the problem go away.

First thing to try would be to check the machine for viruses.

Second - to try to move your firefox profile out of the way (but do not delete it) - this way you can start firefox clean, without addons. If it starts fast and works - you got problems with profile, otherwise - put the profile back, it wasn't the problem.

two network worms meeting somethere in the world wild web:

first one - I attack unix machines, take them down in hundreds. And do it with great pleasure...

second one - I attack windows machines, and also crash them in thousands... Without any pleasure :(...

first one - Why no pleasure?

second one - Well, you just can't tell: either you crashed it down, or it just crashed by itself.

As for Limewire, you can easily tell if one of the files is virus:

1. There's no license tag.

2. There's no bitrate listed.

3. Thousands or hundreds of users share the file.

4. If at a 5% completion, you cannot preview it - then abort it. It's a bug.

5. Keep AVG running or Norton or something. I've hit those "Mp3 viruses" a lot, and AVG caught them each time.

I'm guessing Yoli's problem is insufficient RAM to run Firehog.

computer viruses are more virulent and sneaky than ever!

always make a backup of your drive before you get on the net!

once one of the new viruses gets on now they are very deadly!

use a good antivirus software(bitdefender or kaspersky) before and after you get on the net!

remember your firefox has flaws too, with or without viruses!

i'd use k-meleon instead or opera. although they are not loaded with features,

they tend to be faster than firefox! also, do maintenance on your computer such as defrag it, remove unnecessary files, etc...

good luck;)

I keep AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy running 24/7 on all three of our computers here at home. They update each night and scan while we sleep. I rarely get a virus that goes undetected. I have yet to have one that cannot be removed manually.

As to the latest and greatest Firefox loading slow, This computer, which has an ancient Athlon 1600 CPU, indeed loads slow. The other two, which are three and one year old and and have newer AMD CPUs load much quicker. I have maxed out memory on both of mine and Dear Wife's machine has over 1 gig, so memory is not a factor. My tech group has decided the bus speed on the older chips makes for slow loading with the newest browser software.
