Windows Media Player Problem

Post by bobover3 (imported) »

Help! I use a PC with Vista Home Premium. I've always used Windows Media Player with this PC, even though I also have RealPlayer. Tonight, when I clicked on the Media Player shortcut, nothing happened. It seems the software has vanished, leaving only the shortcut. How could this have happened?

I thought I'd just download a new copy of Media Player, but I can't figure out which is the right version. When I go to the Microsoft download site, versions 10 and 11 are both described as being for Windows XP or special versions of Vista, not Home Premium. How should I proceed?

Any advice will be *greatly* appreciated.

Try using the system restore feature. I am not certain how it works on Vista, but on XP you click Start/All Programs/Accesories/System tools/System Restore. A wizard will open. Select System Restore then it will bring you to a calender. Some of the dates will be highlighted. Click on a previous date when you know Media Player worked, then follow the prompts. The system will restore itself from back-up files on the D:\ partition to the exact settings and software you had on that date. Note that this will not erase any files you have saved since then, so you won't lose any data. It will just restore your operating system to its exact condition upon that date. Try it and good luck. Let us know if it worked for you.

You might also go to MSN homepage, and download it again if you have the bandwidth. Then again, an "upgrade" to XP or even 2000 would probably be faster and easier.

See if anything here helps:

Update - This morning, when I turned my computer on, Media Player was back and working! Strange and stranger!

I didn't download anything new, because I wanted to hear what you all had to say first. I'll remember your advice, just in case.

Thanks very much for your suggestions! It's great to know I can come here for help.

The majority of the down loads and or updates don’t take effect or work until after you restart your computer

I have ran into many problems not restarting after updateing
