I must first give you the obligatory warning not to self-medicate with hormones, logarithmically so if you smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease. Any 2 of those combined, and I would really worry.

That being said, Premarin is refined from horse urine. The name comes from pregnant mare's urine. It's rather cruel to produce, and the estrogens are equine ones. Synthetic Estradiol is widely available, effective, and no horses suffer.

Oral estrogens are hardest on the liver, as well. It passes through your liver twice in order for you to metabolize it. Again, self medicating isn't the best idea - liver functions should be monitored. Injectible estrogens are safer on the liver, and not as big an ordeal as you might think. I take one 40mg (1ml) every 2 weeks. I administer this myself, but I have access to bloodwork and the like. It is also readily available.

Getting on to other concerns, I don't think it's wise to just start a normal dosage all at once. While my evidence is anecdotal, it seems that big hormonal swings will produce a compensating reaction from your body. Since you won't be on an antiandrogen , and want to maintain erections, your balls may decide to fight back. You'll be moody and weepy and angry and 7 kinds of irrational, sort of like PMS. Your plan to stop it for a few days a month might have similar results. If you're anything like me, you'll get angry and horny (never a good combo). Whew.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this has a good chance of permanently affecting your fertility. Most of the damage antisndrogens do is reversible for a while, but estrogen can shut down fertility quickly.

Sorry for both my doom-and gloom and my lack of coherent flow. It's late here, and I tap this out on a phone. Feel free to PM me if you have further questions. To everyone else, did I miss anything? :P

I actually did a regiment of 2.5 mg daily of premarin back a few years ago. From what I understand it is not necessary to copy the female cycle by stopping the drug for four to five days a month. My nipple did enlarge and I got some modest breast development, both remained after I stopped taking the drug. Once my estrogen levels were up it seemed not only my nipples but the skin all over my body body became sensitive to touch. Just my shirt rubbing against my chest would send shivers down my body. Unfortunately my source of medicine ended after about 6 months so I can not tell you about any long term bad side effects. I am currently thinking about using In House Pharmacy, recommended by many, and resuming a daily estrogen regiment.

I just want to echo some of the excellent advise given. If your serious about your health don't self medicate. You really want to have a doctor monitor things like Liver function etc to make you safe. And with a doctor you get a prescription and a safe form of HRT. I also agree that the Horse Synthetics are scary weird stuff. Patches, gels or creams that are transdermal (I think) are better delivery systems. Injections are ok. Pills are the least good in my opinion. There are many options for patches the "dot" climera etc. Rub on gels might be even better as I think you have less skin reactions. Compounded creams are a worth while option due to low cost and the concept that mixing a custom mix of Estrogen(s), Progesterone and even Testosterone (Post GRS or Orchiectomy) will give you the most normal female mix.

Talk to your GP, get a reference to a gender therapist.
