The Rev Dr Peter Mullen, who is rector of St Michael’s Cornhill and St Sepulchre without Newgate in the City, said in an internet blog that homosexuality was "clearly unnatural, a perversion and corruption of natural instincts and affections, and because it is a cause of fatal disease".

He wrote: "Let us make it obligatory for homosexuals to have their backsides tattooed with the slogan SODOMY CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH and their chins with FELLATIO KILLS."

The Bishop of London, the Rt Rev Richard Chartres, said the posting, which has since been taken down, was "highly offensive". The Rev Mullen, 66, was told on Friday that he could face disciplinary action.

Peter Tatchell of gay rights group OutRage! said he should resign.

The rector, who has written for The Daily Telegraph, insisted that he meant no harm: "I wrote some satirical things on my blog and anybody with an ounce of sense of humour or any understanding of the tradition of English satire would immediately assume that they’re light-hearted jokes."

Mr Mullen is also listed as the chaplain to the London Stock Exchange. However, an LSE spokesman said it was a historical title. "There are no formal links between us and him in any way."

The best comprehensive book I have yet found on the Catholic priests is Lead Us Not into Temptation: Catholic Priests and the Sexual Abuse of Children, by Jason Berry (1992. New York: Doubleday).

Reading this actually frightens me a lot, not for the reasons you might think though. I am frightened so much when I think that this fellow, at age 66, is clearly losing his marbles. I am 46, and maintaining a tight grip on my sanity, so far, I have not started shooting at non-existant space alieins or trying to tattoo anyone. But I truly wonder if somewhere in the deep forgotten subconcsious of my mind there may be some hate driven mania just waiting for my senility to set it loose.

Twenty or thirty years from now, I wonder with a considerable ammount of dread, what will I be like? Will I be a charmming elderly gent? Or a crazy old bat trying to tattoo someone? Seriously, I would rather die than end up like this crazy old bat trying to tattoo homosexuals with false "warnings." It seems to me that age 66 seems sort of young to be that looney.

He wouldn't like to know what I'd like to tattoo on him! Hate mongering can't be excused with any amount of mental diminished capacity. In this world climate of financial collapse, I am hoping some of the right-wing extremists will finally be ignored so we can address the real problems that face the world.

This hating assbite, Rev. Dr. Peter Mullen, reminds me of a Roman Catholic priest of the 1930's.

Father Charles Edward Coughlin was a priest with his own anti-semetic radio show carried on several networks with a listening audience of nearly 40 million people.

He favored the policies of both Mussilini and Hitler and belonged to an American organization that planned to murder prominent Jews, Communists and several U.S. Congressmen.

At a 1938 rally in the Bronx, he said the Jews in America will think Nazi Germany treated them kindly after we Americans get done with them.

Well as far as I am concerned Rev. Dr. Peter Mullen, Father Charles Edward Coughlin and Rev Fred Phelps are all birds of a feather, and I think that bird is a turkey.

This guy is a total loser. It is really time for people to move beyond this kind of thing. The fact that there are still people hung up on others sexuality is really a sad commentary on our society. This is the kind of crap the Nazi's promoted doing.
