Thanks for the question. It's probably a good idea to explain my name for those readers outside the American Southwest. Jesus (pronounced "Hay-soos" with the accent on the second syllable) is probably the most commonly given boy's name today in this area. It is certainly by far the most popular among the Hispanic population. I grew up surrounded by boys named Jesus. Confusion (and sometimes anger among the Anglos) abounded - and was great fun! It is the Spanish (and originally Greek) version of "Joshua." The religious figure would have been called Yeshua by his own mother, the Aramaic version of the same name.

Devout Catholic parents hope that the name will influence the development of their son, much the same way that Moslem parents name their sons Mohammed in hopes of both honoring the prophet and producing a properly religious child.

It doesn't always work, though. I delight in letting people know that THIS Jesus is a Buddhist. (It only works in writing, though.) You can also keep things straight by referring to me as "Jesus A." and the religious figure as "Jesus H.," though that may only work for Americans who have heard the epithet "Jesus H. Christ!!!"
