Los Angeles Oil

I heard a discussion today about the oil field that underlies Los Angeles. Someone claimed that the field could produce a million barrels of oil daily. That is more that half what our offshore wells produce.

That field was actively exploited in the 1930s and 40s. While there are still a large number of active oil wells in the Long Beach area, most are "stripper" wells bringing in just a few barrels per day each.
Here's a link to an article about the Signal Hill field (surrounded by the city of Long Beach), once one of the largest and most productive in the world!

Blaise, was it on NPR? I heard just enough to get me interested on the way to work this morning, so I don't have enough to form an opinion. I briefly heard some folks who were receiving a monthly stipend say they wanted it stopped, but I wondered if anyone was refusing to cash a check. I heard one woman say many people in the area had developed cancer, and she was under the impression it might be related to the drilling.

Yes, it was on NPR. I heard only a bit of the broadcast. My impression was that the stripper wells are not deep wells.
In Louisiana, we have natural gas wells that run to about six thousand feet. But there is a deeper field at around 14,000 feet that we now exploit. Oil and gas wells involve polution because of the heavy metals in the drilling fluids. Once the well is drilled those fluids are not needed, but they usually remain somewhere on site.

OK, so nuke LA off the face of the earth (neutron bombs) and go after the oil.
My truck used 5 gallons of gas to travel 5 miles tonight; I need it.
I also need 4 new tires now, though, and probably a drive shaft and some serious transmission work.

They don't re-inject to maintain reservoir pressure and get rid of the stuff?

My grandmother lived in Long Beach, and my family used to live in Garden Grove so I remember seeing all the oil wells (both on land and out to see on Islands). The last time I was in Long Beach was a few years ago, and most of the wells were gone.

OH PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! I so want to find a video clip of Donald Rumsfeld telling America about how the Iraqi oil fields are going to pay for the invasion.... Remember that? "The Iraqi people will pay for their own liberation...."
Now, we get that clip, and dub over "Iraqi" with "Californian"... and we get a few other idiots who ranted on Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction program, now we dub "Arnold Schwarztzeneger" over that.... and PRESTO! We invade California and waste a trillion dollars on that invasion too! But at least now, our soldiers will get to invade someplace NICE, not crummy like Iraq.

Yes, but getting rid of L. A. serves the common good!

I am intrigued by how much oil is in that field. I recall how fascinated I was by Long Beach.
