First Bone density scan next week!

With my pending lay off, I am attempting to use my remaining health insurance to get overhauled before it ends.

So while at the doctors office I was re-giving my history to the nurse. Why his office always re-asks for history, I dont know. Maybe history will change it self one day... anyhow, I -- again -- didnt tell her of my castration. I didn't tell her because I had my neurosurgeon's nurse last year run out of the office when I finished telling her I was castrated. The neurosurgeon himself felt uncomfortable about my castration also. I still use him, he's working on my brain not my bottom parts...

So when the doctor came in he checked me over and toward the end I told him that I had left something out of my history. I told him I was castrated in 2005. He had no reaction to that.

I went on to tell him -- and I quote -- "My friends have been peer pressuring me into getting a bone density scan. Do you think I can get one?"

I was told that due to my age most insurance companies wouldnt cover it, but he'd have his nurse check into it.

A few hours later I get a call -- Cigna approved my Bone density scan because of my diagnosis (Havent a clue what he told Cigna..) and I get to have it next week... On Bobbie's 29th birthday no doubt. :)

WooHOO! I get to find out if I have bones and how dense I am!

I get to have my test at the Methodist Womens Breast Clinic. I'll be the only dude patient in the place that day. :)

Ohh -- and to prevent this thread from turning into a sympathy thread on "Im sooo sorry you're losing your job.." I also have a interview the next day.

Most Eunuchs eventually have osteoporsis. Glad you are going the scan. Hope others can see the need to get a scan. It is a pain to take your Fosamax but something that most of us have to do once a week.

Yes, I think having bilateral orchiectomy on your chart is an "automatic" for having bone density scan(s) Your doctor should probably be telling you to take Calcium tabs twice a day from now on. You may find you need a more potent form (Prescription Fosomax etc) but anyway, good luck with the scan. BTW I think the people being freaked out are picking up on your saying "Castration" when the medical term might not put them off so much. Perhapes they think you were hauled into an alley way and neutered vs a medical procedure.

Many men have the same situation and if the staff or doctors are really that easily freaking out check out a new clinic....

Was like pulling teeth to get Incuse to get the bone scan. I have been after him for a year to get the base line test. It is really way too late for his base line but, at least he will know where he is at this stage in his life.

Anyone that is starting chemical castration drugs would be very wise to have a bone density scan done before your body under goes any changes. If you do the short cut and start with the castration get the bone scan done as soon after. It seems like you can develop osteoporosis very fast. Within a few years.

Taking far more then enough calcium and vitamin D does not seem to always prevent the disease. I like many others have the osteoporosis in 2 -3 years of reduced or no testosterone. In my case I wounder if I had osteoporosis before I started chemical castration. I had my first test starting into my third year of chemical castration. I had 20% bone loss on the first test. I am on Prescription Fosomax now. Age does not seem to matter. Under 30 years old can get it just as well as a good friend has found out.

It finally took actually asking my doctor. It would probably be a while off before I get a bone density test had it not been for cigna picking up the tab.

I pop nearly a handful of pills each day already. It seems a cheapo fosamax pill once a week wont be too bothersome on me. Wish more of my pills were once a week.

I'll tell you in the next few weeks whether or not I even need fosamax. Maybe I can get that once a year treatment Ive been hearing about on TV if I need to.

If I go on fosamax, I can definately expect to get some looks from the rite aid folks when I pick that prescription up. It doesn't help that it shows on the front of the box that it's for use by women with osteoporosis.

You could tell them you are picking up for a red nun....

Bone problems happen in men as well so don't sweat the fact that women see doctors 10:1 for health problems vs men who rarely go unless blood is shooting out. :D

And I passed my first bone scan but it was done shortly after my Orchiectomy. My doctor said that Vitamin D and 2 calciums a day from now on and cross our fingers I don't need anything more advanced.

Riteaid has this slogan "With us, it's personal".

When I go in to pick up my 'scripts I dont have to give my name. I just say hey, how's it going, bullshit for a moment, and they grab my drugs. If Mary Kim is there, she won't let me leave unless I talk to her for 20 minutes.

Saying I'm picking up drugs for a nun wouldn't fly at rite aid.

ItÂ’s a serious mistake to think that osteoporosis only affects women after menopause and eunuchs who are not on HRT. While less common in other populations, it is a major health risk for many intact males and women before menopause. Two earlier threads on the Archive that considered osteoporosis are

Consider Osteoporosis (http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=3460)

Osteoporosis for All (http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=4076)

Doctors sometimes need to be reminded of the importance of conditions that they do not see often.
