>> Not that I doubt these kids know guns, have taken the safety courses, and can handle guns safely... But could you at least have put up a hunting rifle? And not a semi-automatic assault rifle?
>>I sometimes think that these people have three active brain cells.
>>A nice hunting rifle would be a good prize, or a premium target rifle.
OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Oklahoma church canceled a controversial gun giveaway for teenagers at a weekend youth conference.
Windsor Hills Baptist had planned to give away a semiautomatic assault rifle until one of the event's organizers was unable to attend.
The churchs youth pastor, Bob Ross, said its a way of trying to encourage young people to attend the event. The church expected hundreds of teenagers from as far away as Canada.
We have 21 hours of preaching and teaching throughout the week, Ross said.
A video on the church Web site shows the shooting competition from last years conference. A gun giveaway was part of the event last year. This year, organizers included it in their marketing.
I dont want people thinking My goodness, were putting a weapon in the hand of somebody that doesnt respect it who are then going to go out and kill,' said Ross. Thats not at all what were trying to do.
Ross said the conference isnt all about guns, but rather about teens finding faith.
You make a lot of new friends down here, said Vikki Goncharenko, who attended the conference. You get to meet new people. There's a bunch of things that are going on. It's just, you have a wonderful time.
Friday evening, Ross said the gun giveaway had been canceled. Pastor emeritus Jim Vineyard, who ran the event, injured his foot and wouldnt be able to attend. The gun giveaway was also removed from the church Web site.
Ross said the church would give the gun away next year instead. He said the church spent $800 buying the gun for the promotion.

You can say that again A-1, theres a church that should be shut down but I am also sure the NRA will be right there to defend them.

The term "assault rifle" is often bandied about in the press with no standard definition of what that is. The military would consider the following as assault rifles: M-16, fully auto AK-47, and certain other fully auto pieces such as H&K, etc. The press, however, cosiders the following popular rifles as assault rifles: SKS, AK-47, AR-15, M1A1, and others, which are largely semi-auto (one shot for each pull of the trigger) civilian versions of military rifles. These may LOOK like "bad guns" cosmetically, but are functionally no different from a semi-auto hunting rifle you can buy at a sporting goods store. And then to further cloud the issue, some anti-gun outfits has been known to call any auto-loading rifle -- hunting rifles included -- as "assault rifles." It's an emotion-charged term....ooohhh, an ASSAULT RIFLE !!! gasp! that has little meaning in the shooting world. Technically speaking, I own no assault rifles, but the local newspaper or TV station would consider about four of my pieces as assault weapons, but they are no more lethal nor capable of assaulting a fortified position than my 30-06 deer rifle.
As to this coming from a church, I'm not surprised...the modern church is getting desperate for membership and will use about any technique to ramp up their numbers. I consider myself a Conservative, but I have no church affiliation at all...and don't want one. If you've read any of my recent posts here on Christianity, you'll know that I consider the Christian church an institution founded on lies and which exists purely for the motives of power and money. However, being on the right, I often consider the church and its members as "useful idiots" since they can usually be relied on to back some of the same issues I do, such as pro-gun issues...and the few issues I disagree on with them, I am ambiguous about and really don't care.
Just my two-cents' worth.

I know what the rifle is...
Couldn't they have picked a fancy hunting rifle?
Then they would have avoided the ugly press.

It's nice to see a voice of reason here. Both the press and the general public are known all too well for tossing around terms in all areas of life they really don't understand at all (at least in the case of the general public - with the press I'm sure they know exactly how they are misleading the public).

These people are dangerous. They should not even have squirt guns.
What they need is NEUTERED before they can infect the gene pool...

giving guns away is nothing new in hunter friendly parts of america. in the documentry bowling for columbine, Michael Moore opens an account at a bank and receives a FREE GUN, they hand him a rifle right in the bank! i am assuming they do a background check before the transaction, so it would be no different than giving away a car. each have the potential to kill but will not be used for that purpose. period. there is nothing wrong with giving away legal guns to attract people.
if someone wants a gun they can just go get one they dont have to wait for the church, bank or toys r us to pass them out.
ps i dont like guns, i dont have and dont want a gun. i have only fired a gun once. it was at a firing range with my cop friend and i pulled the trigger and i felt the power coming from me in the form of a metal projectile. it was overwhelming knowing everyone in that room had that power and could kill me. i just walked away after the one shot.
pps..my 1 shot hit the metal clip holding the target, i broke it good hahahhah suckers.
